Keep in mind I'm currently unemployed, so I'm looking to spend under 10 grand if at all possible. I'm in the Midwest so there's plenty of early to mid 2000's stuff available in that price range.

I hate driving cars since I'm a giant, but if you wanted to recommend a couple cars I wouldn't be against it.

I'm cool with standard repairs, I'd just like to avoid the head issues I've had with my last two (coincidentally American made) vehicles, and catastrophic bullshit like that.

Ive always been happy with my Trailblazer.  The engine and trans are bulletproof, and both were on Ward's 10 best list if I recall.  It is a gas whore though, as i would average 15mpg.  Strictly highway driving I would hit 24mpg.

Used 4 runners are damn good too.  My friend just got a 95 and it isnt uncommon for those to live beyond 300k miles.

I dig 4runners. I might end up going that route. As far as cars go, I've been looking at mid-2000 Lexus IS's. They're right around my 8-10k price point in my area (usually with 120-140k miles) and seem to have great reviews

I really want a late 70's early 80's K5 so damned bad, but I don't think they'd be too great as a daily driver

Liquid, what do you think about the Mitsubishi Evolution Lancer? It also comes in an automatic version.

I'd say the Subaru is more reliable.  I'll have to consult another friend of mine who's owned two of those.

Cool, thanks. The Lancer Evo is significantly more expensive - 8K to 10K more.

From what I've been told by both of them (the auto reviewer and the owner of two of them) that would not be ideal for you.  The new ones have a dual clutch setup which in automatic form gives you a very laggy throttle response.  And it is less reliable than the Subaru.

So yea, basically you should get the WRX and be happy.  Because that car is an excellent daily driver and it will make you happy.  Get it in blue, though.  Because it looks good in blue.

I drove that thing many times and it was always enjoyable.  Handles great, has enough power, absorbs bumps well.  Relatively fuel efficient.

My friend has an orange Sti and I swear it's one of the most beautiful vehicles I've seen in my life

Yea but the STI is manual only so MTL's brain will explode if he tries to drive it.

In his defense, I HATE manuals. I can drive them, but I hate them for driving around the city. Highway driving is a different thing entirely though

Manuals are ideal for people who like to drive.  But if you are in traffic or going uphill in traffic, its a fucking bitch.

I don't like to drive. And my commute is uphill both ways.

I work in the Bronx at multiple locations, some of which are inaccessible by subway. And I work odd hours sometimes. A car is necessary.
