-----------------------------------------------------------------------
BE WARNED THIS THREAD WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
We had this at the other board, but going to bring it back. What are the movies where the bad guys won? it doesn't matter if in the sequel they get defeated, but in the initial movie they prevail. The movies also have to be somewhat well known and generally from a major movie producer, though critical acclaimed indie movies can apply. I dunno about Braveheart. They did kill Wallace, but his death was just what the Scots needed symbolically for them to finally beat the English, so while the English won the battle they lost the war

The Tall Man won in all the Phantasm movies.

Earth was wiped out in Goke: Bodysnatcher From Hell

Freddy's overall won in a few of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. The first, second, and remake anyways.

earth is destroyed in Beneath The Planet of the Apes (though technically the hero caused that, whether by accident as he died or intentionally)

really depends on your point of view as to whether evil won in Let The Right One In and Let Me In

same goes for Revenge of the Nerds really...ha ha...date rape

The Decoys won.

Patrick Bateman got away with it all in American Psycho (OR DID HE?!)

Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo

Let's see...Shinji did not save Rei from the last movie and the new one is a clone, everyone hates him because he caused an impact that's nearly killed everyone and in the end his father manipulates him again and gets what he wants, Kaworu dies to prevent a fourth impact and at the end Shinji is just broken.

In the dark knight batman becoming a villain was a good thing and a victory for him.

His arrival and dismantling of the power structure of the mafias meant that they would become more vicious. His boogeyman stance made more copycats without his moral structure in the forms of vigilantes, and costumed criminals inevitable as well. By becoming a hero considered a villain he was able to finish his job morally. He broke the villains but didn't continue the escalation of lunacy

The link to that dark knight returns articles shows how the third act brings the story full circle, but points out the hold in not showing how the story would have properly continued. I still liked it nevertheless but in every chapter Bruce Wayne's wins a pyrrhic victory

I'll add the others after work. I actually think this is the biggest list on the net.

So vote. Shall we remove dark knight?

have we mentioned The Mist yet or would that technically fit?

Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 fits as well. Michael may be dead, but Laurie is either institutionalized by the end or dead depending on the version you watch. Dr. Loomis dies as well.

Brings up a whole debate on what constitutes evil winning. Take the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Sally Hardesty escapes at the end, but she's clearly lost her damned mind in the process and all of her friends are dead while only one of the Sawyers are.

Oh yeah TCM: The Beginning counts. Leatherface kills all the protagonists in that one

Cry Wolf: the killer gets away with it.

Wild Things does pretty much the same, though I don't think there's a single good person in it. Maybe Neve Campbell as she was taking revenge for her friend, but she masterminded a pretty complex scheme where alot of (admittedly bad) people died.

Things may still be going on in Event Horizon at the end

ditto The Thing (80s)

evil wins ALOT in the V/H/S series

The Talented Mr. Ripley, though it isn't exactly a happy ending for him either.

Psycho 2.....just about everyone dies and Norman's sanity snaps again after 20 years worth of therapy fixing him.

Dead Silence has the ghost lady winning

The Lords of Salem has a bad ending. Ditto House of 1000 Corpses

found footage movies in general tend to have bad endings

Serial Mom is more satire, but she gets away with her murders in a court of law and then immediately kills someone else over wearing white shoes after labor day

I guess American History X fits given how its pretty much a moral loss

most Satanic movies from 70s stuff like the Touch of Satan to Angel Heart to The Devil's Advocate have a bit of a downer (i count Devil's Advocate since even though everything is undone, Kevin's just going to fall right back into his father's plans again)

Both of The Descent movies end pretty badly

Hatchet has Victor Crowley winning

i could go on and on but I don't have all night lol
