Early box office tracking is already in for the upcoming weekend, which sees the debut of two highly anticipated releases: Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" and Disney's "Big Hero 6," based on the Marvel comic of the same name. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Disney animated feature may be on track to outpace Nolan's newest epic -- by $10 to $15 million. Box office predictors state that "Big Hero 6" could cross $60 million in its stateside debut weekend, while "Interstellar" is on track for between $50 and $55 million.

Both amounts are nothing to sneeze at for an opening weekend -- in fact, if estimates prove to be true, it would be the fourth time in history that two films have opened past the $50 million in the same weekend. Whichever way the box office weekend totals go, "Big Hero 6" has already continued Disney's streak of hits in animation -- the film has already taken in $1.4 million in Thursday runs (the critically acclaimed "Frozen" only took in $1.2 million on its pre-Thanksgiving debut).

"Interstellar," by comparison, took in $2.7 million in late-night screenings, which compares favorably to Nolan's last film, "Inception," which earned $3 million in its midnight showings.

Hm, quick check on RT says that Interstellar sits on 72%, while Big Hero 6 sits on 90%.

Interstellar looked like it would be good until someone here said it devolved into some bullshit about the human condition rather than an actual science theory movie.  Typical and moronic.

"Love transcends everything"
Apparently that is the revelation at the end, at least by what I've heard of the movie.

I saw this mentioned on another forum, and I guess this is an accurate description of the movie:

"I think the problem that most people have with this film is that it feels like a sci-fi film with themes of love and faith tacked on, whereas it should be interpreted a film about love and faith in a sci-fi setting."

So... it's "Signs 2".

Not surprised. A light-hearted Disney animated flick, and one based loosely off a Marvel franchise vs. some sci-fi movie.

Even with Nolan's name attached, as well as the actors involved, it was a gamble to think it could beat out Disney.

Is anyone really surprised by this???

Nope. Disney's a hard act to challenge. Unless they've thrown down a lack-luster looking movie (Like Planes
& Cars for ex.) and they were being challenged by either a big name franchise film or another animated film
that looks more interesting, they'll always take the weekend unopposed.

It's true- one particularly non-#1 opening was Frozen, which spent its first two weeks as the #2 movie, trailing The Hunger Games and The Hobbit sequels in their early releases. Then all of a sudden it started picking up steam, then completely annihilated everything else come holiday time, staying at #1 for a ridiculous amount of time, and staying in the top ten for even longer. One of the few cases where a movie started packing in more people per week as time went on.

Interstellar was obviously going to be a big hit, but its not a franchise player like The Hunger Games is, so it's much harder for it to surpass a big Disney film, ESPECIALLY now that they're on the streak of a lifetime thanks to John Lasseter.

Saw Big Hero 6 with the family, and everyone loved it. Like any good Disney movie, it makes you laugh, has solid pacing, and pulls at the heart strings in at least one scene. I recommend everyone go see it.

****Spoilers****

I really enjoyed the story as a whole, and the way Hiro changed and learned over the course of film. A cool and unexpected moment was when the team catches the Masked Man (who I was pleased to learn was not the older brother) and Hiro orders Baymax to destroy the guy. He's still a kid... he's still impulsive and temperamental... and the "That was his mistake" comment sets him off. His willingness to violate Baymax's core identity to get revenge was nice character moment... and it's better to see heroes make mistakes than to be perfect.

The portal rescue at the end was another nice and unexpected moment. The visuals were crazy cool. And also to show that Hiro... by letting go of his revenge-list was able to succeed in saving the girl. Whereas Callahan was too stuck on using the portal as a weapon of revenge to think about the alternatives.
