Was the Montreal Screwjob the biggest work of all time?

I got to thinking about it.

On the one hand, it creates a great villain to set out to be the foil for pretty much the entire Attitude Era in Vince McMahon.

It also gives Bret Hart white hot babyface heat for his jump to WCW, which they of course fucked up with.

Despite all this and further horrible things that happen to the Harts, Bret still eventually comes back.

The oddness that this would happen when Bret basically has a documentary being filmed about him is weird as hell.

Likewise, there are some people like the New Age Outlaws who are of the opinion that "come on, all this is going on. It's either the biggest coincidence of all time or the biggest work"

It wasn't a work. If it was, Bret and Vince would have come to an agreement on licensing rights a hell of a lot sooner after WCW folded. Even his HoF induction, when he skipped the Mania because Shawn would be there? There was a lot of inner turmoil for Bret that you could see for many years until his Raw return.

FUCKING DIGUSTING

No. They would have blown it off by now. These are people who can't keep a TAG TEAM together for more than five months before making them enemies.
