Because when you’ve got a body count like Dredd’s, it deserves respect…

An early example of Dredd’s willingness to resort to extreme measures… In order to stop a plague of poisonous mutated spiders, Dredd calls in the heavy bombers and obliterates an entire sector of Mega-City One.  2000AD #143

Milwaukee took a direct hit from a 50 megaton nuke in the nuclear war that devastated America. The entire population have risen as ghosts to wreak vengeance. Dredd threatens them with a 1,000 megaton nuclear strike if they don’t move on quietly to the afterlife.  Judge Dredd Annual 1981

The Soviets use an undercover agent to hit Mega-City One with a nuclear warhead. When Dredd uncovers the ruse, he threatens East-Meg One with a nuclear retaliation. Rather than call his bluff, the Soviets detonate one of their own 10 megaton nukes in the middle of their own city as a gesture of appeasement.  2000AD #198-#200

Later, the Soviets initiate a new fully fledged nuclear war. Dredd presses the button to dispatch Mega-City One’s ultimate retaliation devices – Total Annihilation Devices, each missile capable of wiping out all of East-Meg One (with a population of over half a billion people) twice over. The Soviets, however, have a counter-move prepared, as they teleport the TADs to an alternate Earth. The TADs completely destroy the entire planet.  2000AD #249-#250  ***

Much later on, we find out that the counter Earth was fully populated and a virtual utopia. Every living thing on the planet was killed by Dredd’s missiles. That’s a big kill count…  Megazine #305 & #308  ***

Dredd wipes out “legions” of attacking Soviet troops with a series of thermal charges.  2000AD #258-#259

One of Dredd’s most famous moments. Dredd’s revenge for the Soviet attack on Mega-City One is brutal – he nukes East-Meg One off the face of the planet, single-handedly killing over half a billion people with the touch of a button.  2000AD #266-267  ***

Dredd orders a nuclear strike on a Mega-City One sector in order to eradicate a species of mutated fleas.  Judge Dredd Annual 1983

Dredd orders a nuclear strike on a being “big enough to knock Earth off its axis” (judging by the art, his head alone is about the same size as the moon). The being reforms, but the initial destruction of something so large is an impressive reminder of the level of firepower that Dredd can call down when needed.  Judge Dredd Mega Special 1991

Dredd gets nuke-happy again to obliterate a gigantic pirate spaceship.  2000AD #769

In a desperate attempt to prevent a zombie apocalypse, Dredd orders nuclear strikes on five Mega-Cities. The combined population of those cities is over two billion people. The omniscient narration calls it “the greatest act of genocide the world has ever seen.” He also triggers the San Andreas Fault in the process. All in a day’s work…  2000AD #793 and Megazine (v2) #7  ***

Granted, many of the death tally would have included those already lost to the zombie infection. However, much later it is revealed that in at least one of the Mega-Cities, there were still hundreds of millions of survivors resisting the zombie hordes when Dredd ordered the strike.  2000AD #1731-1734

The Grand Hall of Justice falls into enemy hands. In response, Dredd floods every iso-cube, killing every single perp currently in holding in Mega-City One regardless of the nature of their offence.  2000AD #845

After Dredd wiped out East-Meg One, the survivors attempted to rebuild their city. Unfortunately, they pissed Dredd off again, so he decided to sink the entire thing into the ocean.  2000AD #1148-#1150

Not a nuclear strike, but a brutal example of how far Dredd is willing to go to achieve his objectives. Here he orders a missile strike that kills hundreds of non-combatant women and children.  Megazine #248

Mega-City One is invaded by the literal demons of hell. Dredd’s response? He travels to hell and begins razing the place to the ground and summarily executing the inhabitants until the demons agree to withdraw from Earth.  Megazine #260-263
