I just got out of the theater.  I will make a review when I get home but for now I will add my two cents about any supposed politics: there weren’t any.  The Skrull/Kree thing was bo different than any other sci-fi story where one alien race oppresses another.  As for any man-hating goobly-gook, it was also not there.  As expected, people were being angry on the internet for no reason.

Review to follow.

The Good:

The 90's soundtrack and overall 90's vibe was fun.  I'm glad they didn't overdo it with giant cell phones and stuff.  We got a chuckle out of Radioshack and 90's era computers and that was enough.

It's always fun to see Nick Fury, of course.  Coulson, too.  And yes, the CGI for Fury was really good.  Thinking about it, Fury was the MVP for this movie in my opinion.

Ben Mendohlson was charming and I like how they dealt with the Skrulls.  A lot of people think we will never see Skrull bad guys but I think by the time we catch up with them in the modern MCU, we'll see at least a few Skrull factions who are willing to do some evil things.  In the comics, the Skrulls were pretty benevolent millions of years ago and turned evil due to Kree shenanigans, so I suspect we will see the Fantastic Four kicking some shapeshifter ass at some point.  And if not, I'll be interested to see what they do with them.

The Bad:

Nick Fury's origin is stupid af and I will fight you in real life if you disagree.

I feel nothing regarding Carol Danvers.  I'm not sure if it's the script, the directors, or if Brie Larson is still trying to get used to a superhero role.  There were a lot of scenes where she came off wooden, even AFTER she got over her brainwashing.  Towards the end of the movie where she is confronting Yon-Rogg or Supreme Intelligence, her emotional range never quite gets above mildly annoyed.  Sometimes they give her some snarky remarks or one liners but they fall flat as if she's reading cue cards.  I hope the Russo Brothers give her some snappy scenes in Endgame as they have a knack for bringing out the best in the MCU characters.

Even beyond Carol lacking a clear personality, the movie itself was not that exciting since we've seen most of it before.  A lot of Marvel movies follow a formula but when they do, at least they bring something new to the table.  For instance, Black panther followed the formula to a T but it got by on setting up the world of Wakanda, which added to the MCU.  This movie doesn't really have much in the way or world building.  We've seen the Kree before, we've seen the Tesseract, we've seen the early days of SHIELD, and even when it comes to Goose, we've already seen cute aliens who look like Earth animals in the MCU.  The Skrulls were interesting but the movie shrouded them in mystery for the twist so we never got to really explore them as a race.

CONCLUSION:

It is not one of Marvel's best and is on the level of other "meh"-level MCU movies like Incredible Hulk or Dr Strange.  Here's hoping they do something interesting with Captain Marvel in the future as she is supposed to be the face of the universe but doesn't nearly have the charisma of Robert Downey Jr or Chris Evans.

It was all right, but it felt kind of bland. Carol comes off as boring for almost the entire run, which is a shame, since I normally do like her character.  It really felt like the whole mind-wipe angle worked against the film's favor, since it doesn't leave much room for Carol actually develop as a character and we're just waiting for her to remember the person that we already know she was.   And I agree that Brie Larson felt wooden, especially when saying those one-liners.  I thought it would be because she was brainwashed into thinking she was Kree and maybe that's just how the Kree are, but it never feels like she changes, even after she remembers who she is.

I felt somewhat positive walking out of the theater, but I think I'm liking it less the more I think about it.  This would have worked better back in Phase 1, but not so much now.

Also, Nick Fury's eye didn't bother me and I don't really get the backlash I've seen about it. But I've always been in the camp of "who gives a shit" regarding how he lost it.

I've never considered it a huge mystery but with the gravitas he has displayed in the past, one would think there would have been some betrayal in his life that turned him bitter and pessimistic.  There had to be some event in his life to make him such a paranoid and grump bastard.  So we were a little let down that it ended up being a two second gag.  Sure, it's within Fury's character to lie in order to get people to do what he wants but going bck to watch movies like Avengers and Winter Soldier where he alludes to it will have a bit less weight to them and will make Fury look silly.

Found it pretty enjoyable.
Liked the fact that we get an origins story where the fate of the world/universe doesn't outweigh character development.

Brie was fine IMO but I've always had a soft spot for her ever since Scott Pilgrim & the Skull Island.

I don't think her acting or delivery was wooden...to compare her to any of the actors who played Superman, she'd be equivalent to Reeves in her down to earth approach.

I don't think Brie Larson is a bad actress, but I don't think the material she was given did her any favors.  A lot of the dialogue just wasn't very good, so the actors didn't have a lot to work with.

saw it. Pretty good. Not great but some fun action scenes and Carol and Fury had great chemistry

Not sure I like the twist

Not due to the politics..but it close the doors on some stories having the Skull so goody Goody. Since the skrull invasion thing one of my fave stories. Also it take away super skrull with them going away. Which would of nice to have given they have Fantastic four. Like wish more of both sides did fuck up things. They hinted at it with the line "Its blood on my hands" to. But the whole "Oh I just knock him out" make it to more one sides.

there can always be more, less benevolent, Skrulls out there.

Yeah, we only see about fifty Skrulls who were just wanting a place to live.  There’s no indication that the rest of the race is as nice.

Also, it has been twenty years since this movie takes place.   Plenty of time to turn evil.

Ben Mendohlson was good but voicing a Skrull (green skinned alien with pointy ears...) with a Cockney accent was just odd...really had a hard time taking him seriously.

Does anyone know if Sam Jackson actually played himself or just lent his voice to another actor playing his younger self?

I'm just going out on a limb thinking maybe Larsen seemed "wooden" if she had to interact with an actor constantly wearing a motion capture face mask..?

There are scenes in LOTR & the Planet/Apes films when actors weren't that convincing interacting with Andy Serkis wearing the same head gear.

He played himself. They did that Avatar type CGI where they put those "dots" on his face and generated CGI on top/modifying himself currently. He also wore a wig and heavy makeup.

Yeah, Jackson was on set playing himself.  They just de-aged him.  Besides, Brie seemed wooden even without Jackson.

Agree to disagree.
If anything there was moments that even Brie looked stunned at the concept of playing a costumed Superhero.

I'm hoping they go the Ultimates route so we get Carol and  T'Challa as the leaders of a new team. They're clearly introducing an adult Monica in CM 2, so it'd be cool to get a Blue Marvel film (Denzel, PLEASE!!!)
