Am I the only one who doesn't get it?

I mean, yeah, the accent, but look at how many other characters have accents on that show. Plus...Apu's probably got it best out all of Springfield. Has a business, married a beautiful intelligent woman, kids, and is one of the smartest characters on the show.

He's arguably the most successful character on the show.

Personally, I think we should be banning Lisa Simpsons from the show based on being horribly and annoying. :)

The Apu controversy has been around for several years and they took him off the show a few months back.

But yeah, The Simpsons has always had caricatures.  Flanders, Grounds-keeper Willy, Bee Man, etc.  People are stupidly sensitive these days so I'm not surprised Apu left the show.

Did you watch "the problem with apu"? The issue isn't Apu the character specifically but the fact he was basically the only Indian character on TV and for a lot of people was their only exposure to Indians in the early 90s. Because of this a lot of racist, especially young up and coming racist decided to use "thank you come again!" As a way to mock Indians and bully young 1st generation indians. In the documentary a bunch of Indian comedians talk about that.

Basically racist ruin everything.

I think a large part of it is, how is the stereotype character accepted by members of the group they are stereotyping?

For example, the Scottish love Groundskeeper Willie. Australia loves the episode "Bart Vs. Australia."

What do Indians, or Indian-Americans, think of Apu? I'm unsure.
Truten forever!

They cover that in the documentary. A lot of the comedians talk about how a lot of their parents liked Apu but they didn't because he was used to mock them which is something their parents really didn't experience.

I figured they could just have Apu speak without an accent and it would clear things up.

Then people would just think he was a weird black guy
