Morrison is probably my favorite Superman writer. He would give him big moments but also take time to humanize him like when he had him confide in Wally about not being able to live up to everyone's expectations after his powers changed. He also tended to not sacrifice other characters to make Supes look good.

Except when he had Aztek sacrifice himself just to have Superman save the day against Mageddon but he'll Aztek was his character and that's how he decided for him to go out.

The novelisation of Kingdom Come probably summed up Superman best for me.
Tired, broody & fed up with mankind unable to learn from its mistakes.

There's a chapter describing the constant inner turmoil of hearing everybody's cries for help & how it made him feel inadequate in the early days.
How he would fly into space to get away from all the voices...

Then there's that cameo in Hitman where, from memory, he confides a moment of doubt when trying to save some astronauts..

He can be interesting, in small doses. No shocker that many of the most celebrated Superman stories happen to be very finite one-shots and limited runs.

That said, I've always been partial to older Grandpa versions of Superman.

I find that he's never had a good supporting cast, other than other heroes; so his stories in his own books are often semi-awful on this account alone.
But he is a great character and shines in stories where he has the right cast.

To be fair, I tend to find most Superhero stories boring without interaction between heroes. There are some exceptions, of course. Some elements of Superman's supporting cast can be interesting, especially in small doses. But I can't spend too much time in the Daily Planet office without yawning.

Never had a good supporting cast..? lmaoo... Do you actually enjoy Superman stories that arent about how he compares to other heroes in power/stature..?

To be fair, now that I think about it more, it could be that I generally find the non-hero supporting casts of all superheroes to be best in small doses. Supes' might not be worse, and in fact could be better, than that of most others.
It's not about comparing powers--I generally prefer my superheroes in groups. All heroes and not just Superman.

....So You generally don't care about superheroes as characters in their own right. Got it.

Aspirational Heroes (like Superman) are more difficult to write.

Interesting and relevant video here about the two primary hero types and why some people don't understand the point of the Aspirational Hero and many writers try to deconstruct them.

I think the reason All Star Superman works so well is that it plays up the Aspirational Hero role of Superman.

People who don't find Superman interesting almost universally are self loathing adolescent minded misanthropes by definition. And they don't read Superman comics.

LOL oh really? JUST because you find it INTERESTING doesnt mean it is. Superman is universally boring, go on. prove why he isn't
