Werent we united agaisnt a certain enemy though. Can we only unite when we have someone to hate?

Also their were a bunch of protest not to get into IRAQ at the time

Like who though? Guys like Phil Donahue allegedly got removed for being anti Iraq-war. Voices like Ron Paul were few and in-between and all the major political figures from both sides of the aisle supported the war.

Well there were tons of mass protest

The iraq war actully didnt poll that great at the time

The US has been divided Republican/Democrat 50/50 since Nixon or before. But technology is making it worse, because now each side can basically just watch the news and TV and movies they want, without being exposed to the views of the other.
For similar and different reasons, each side has difficulty telling the full truth of their position. The left because they have to a large extent conflated fantasy with reality on many issues and are living in a PC utopian dream. The right because they deep-down feel that some aspects of what they really feel would be taken as so unpalatable by the swing voters that they'd never win again.
We are not entirely rational creatures, so I'm not saying that fully rational, free-speech dialogue is a panacea that will solve everything. But we do need to more rational and unemotional dialogue.
