RIP thanks for the many years of entertainment & inspiration.

Legendary comic book creator and artist Steve Ditko has died at the age of 90.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ditko was found in his New York apartment on June 29, but was believed to have been dead for up to two days before that.

Ditko was best known for creating Spider-Man along with Stan Lee in 1961, and also co-created Doctor Strange with Lee in 1963. After that, he left Marvel for reasons that remain mysterious to this day, and went to work at DC (where he had popular runs on Blue Beetle, Captain Atom, the creation of The Question and the short lived Shade the Changing Man, and many other notable moments) and several other companies. He continued to create memorable characters including the popular Squirrel Girl in the early 1990s, before mostly retiring from comics by the end of the ‘90s.

Though many of his characters remain favorites to this day, Ditko was one of the more reclusive comic book creators. He rarely did interviews or put himself in the public. There aren’t many recent photos of him. Nevertheless, his influence on the comic book landscape through Spider-Man alone—the visual iconography of what is now one of the most successful and beloved superheroes on the planet—was enough to cement his place in history. His contribution to the comic book industry can never be overstated, and he will be dearly missed.

One of the last of his generation- I think Stan Lee might be the only major comic book star of the '60s still kicking. I suppose there's Steranko, Neal Adams and a few others who came along later in the decade.

Ditko was a true original- famously-shy, even in his creative prime (he refused to answer fan letters, and they joke about it in the "Mighty Marvel Marching Society" record they sent out to their fans), obsessive about what he saw as proper morality, and with a very specific take on Spider-Man. As soon as he was gone, you saw a HUGE creative shift in the book, as it became a "College Drama" with a very different feel to it- a sure sign of his creative input. And Doctor Strange was never the same again- nobody else has come close to Ditko's level on that one.

Funny you mention Steranko.  Just saw him last week at The Toy and geekiest.  http://toyandgeekfest.com

He was telling stories from back in the day.  Interesting dude.  They really took care of him had a big booth set up.

I have a good shot of him.  Couldn't find much of any photos on Twitter or Instagram of him.  Just found this one.  While doing a search. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bks79uSHFhE/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=189u7hhjky5f3

It's sad that Ditko wasn't found for 2 days. The idea that someone who had an influence on the world could be ignored for that long bothers me.

I saw Steranko at a convention in Atlantic City. The dude looks like he can call a mob hit at a moment's notice.

ROFLMAO!  He does look like he hung out with Frank and Sammy Davis.

Steranko looks HILARIOUS in person- ultra-tanned, finely-coiffed, but all of five-foot-two. He looks like a Mafiosi that shrunk in the wash.

Sadly not that uncommon for people who live alone, and not in Retirement Communities. Given how antisocial he was, I'm honestly surprised it wasn't longer- usually, it's the smell that tips people off in these cases.

Absolutely, and with the recent heat.  You know he'd started to bloat & breakdown.
