The way I saw it the very first places would have been attacked were the big cities and military bases and they were pretty quick so I think it's believable that humans didn't really get a chance to put up a fight or figure out their weakness.

Yeah I know we're starting over analyse this film...rather than enjoy it for what it was...

But the creatures were more primal than intelligent.
As an alien invasion goes, they seemed to have no motive for coming to Earth.

They didn't seem to eat their prey, just kill on instinct.

The fact that they were primal probably worked in their advantage. Since the probably attacked big cities and military location people probably thought it was some kind of precision strikes when really it was just loud noises.

But yeah we are over analyzing it
