Ed Benes... yay or nay?

What do people think of Benes and his style and students? Second coming or too many unnecessary lines? Too cheesecakey or a real pioneer? Thoughts?

He's no pioneer.
He does pretty good work i guess. More suited to pinups than ongoings imho.

I don't care for his stuff. It feels stiff, derivative of a style that's passed, and yeah, leaning pretty cheesecake-y.

He never turned me off reading a book I was interested in, but he's nothing special either.

His style can be stiff. I liked his work on Birds of Prey and Gen13. Definitely great for pinups. Definitely not a pioneer.

Ivan Reis makes Ed Benes totally irrelevant. All the Jim Lee derived influence plus Alan Davis esque rendering, composition and good anatomy. last really good work i can recall from Benes was his Supergirl run.

Benes’ perspectives are good but all of his characters look the same facially and they all grimace like they’re passing a kidney stone.

Yeah, i was gonna go into the whole stiffness thing, but was in a rush.
Ppl have similar complaints about John Byrne, but his stuff is way better sequentially than Benes imo, mannequin figures or not.
Benes just seems like he never put in the work after a certain point.

A Pioneer? Nah.

Tends toward being too stiff, and/or not sufficiently dynamic ? Yeah, I would agree with those.

Ed is best suited to covers, (iirc pricey and in demand) commissions, and pin-ups. As opposed to large longterm amounts of interior work. That said, he is better than the significant majority of artists that have been employed by mainstream comics in recent years. A company like modern Marvel could do with more artists of his caliber. (Along with writers that can, you know, actually write.)

Ed's Birds of Prey stuff was generally quite nice. He was okay as a short term fill in on Simone's Batgirl a few years ago too. (Brother, has that series ever gone to shit.)

He's good. Not amazing but his work is usually clean and pleasing to the eye.

This is a good way to sum him up.

He's not going down as one of the greats, but hearing that Ed Benes is handling artwork on a book one likes is a positive thing nevertheless.

More than almost any other artist, I think whether or not I like his style depends 100% on the book/characters

This is another good way to sum him up. He's like JRJR in that way to me.

Pretty characters, way too stiff with posing, way too much SameFace, and way too "blank" with the expressions.
