Black Panther Reviews! Now with Spoilers!
« on: February 14, 2018, 01:48:36 AM »
Just got back.  Let's do it.

The Good

The themes of the movie include betrayal, duty vs patriotism, and covering up the past.  It works well as a political thriller/ spy movie.  As advanced as Wakanda is, it's no utopia and kings can make mistakes.

The world building was John Wick levels.  It really took it's time to explore the world and all its tribes and tech.  It never feels crowded or over stuffed, either.

The supporting cast was really good.  I loved all the side characters.  Okoye is badass.  M'Baku is pretty funny.  Suri is like the bratty little sister.  Martin Freeman even gets to kick a little ass.

Andy Serkis as Klaw steals the show IMO.  He's just over-the-top enough to be entertaining but not so much that he looks cheesy.  I've been looking forward to seeing more of Klaw since Age of Ultron.  Serkis is an underrated actor who should stop doing mo-cap and let his natural talent shine.

Killmonger is also a good bad guy.  You get a feel for why he's doing what he's doing, but he's also an evil bastard so he's never too sympathetic.

The action scenes are pretty good too.  The casino fight is especially fun.

Chadwick Boseman is even better here than in Civil War.  He's perfect.

The Bad

They still have the "bad guy is the evil version of the good guy" thing that most Marvel movies have done.  I wish they found something else for Killmonger to use in battle.

They go to South Korea in the middle of the movie and the actor who plays Nikia speaks really shitty Korean.  Most people won't care, but I did.  The Koreans in the audience were laughing a lot.

I wish they would have had more of a set-up for future movies (see spoilers below).

So no Soul Stone?  It seems like they should have it since there is obviously an afterlife associated with Wakandans (and not just the kings since Killmonger meets his father in the after life).  I guess they're saving that for Infinity War.

I like the after credits scene with Bucky at the end, which I think a lot of people suspected would happen.  I like the nod to White Wolf.

Killing Klaw was a mistake.  I think he could have made a great villain down the line.

I agree with the Klaw points. Overall I felt really let down by this movie. I thought the movie suffered massively in the middle section.

The action was good but kinda reparative in the end.

You guys should edit your posts to hide those a bit better.  At least change the font size or something.

Really solid movie. It didn't change the wheel but it did a good job just nailing all the tropes. Like a perfectly cooked steak.

Yeah loved the movie. Hip yet fairly spiritual feeling. Wished there was something leasing into Infinity War.

Saw it last night and it was a great film! Love all the themes and how they combined African & African-American issues throughout. I'd say it was the best origin film we've gotten from the MCU so far. It did get predictable after the challenge but that didn't stop the movie from being enjoyable. Oh, and the music was phenomenal!

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

Shuri was the stand-out, which I wasn't expecting. M'Baku was pretty cool, too. T'Challa got to show a different side than what we got in Civil War and it was nice to see him more "human."

MBJ was fantastic as Killmonger and his POV was totally understandable, even if his response was going too far. He had a point about how Wakanda could've actually been helping make the world a better place.

Love the call back to the comics with BP stopping the Rhino and the way Okoye did it was funny/cute. Speaking of which, the WOMEN!! Damn they were gorgeous!!

I think killing Killmonger off was a mistake as his character could easily grow into one of the best villains the MCU has. Same with Kalw.

Put extra space after the spoilers, otherwise, it’s pretty pointless to put a bunch above.

Why don't we just change the topic title to include Spoliers? Would make things easier.

I edited in a spoiler warning title

The women in this movie were great. All really powerful and likeable without feeling like "girl power" fan service.

One thing I really liked about Black Panther is that he's not really a "tragic" hero. Yeah he lost his dad and he's got some family baggage but that is not what drives him. There isn't many heroes running around like that. You got what Cap and Hawkeye besides BP?

I wouldn't call Ant-Man or Falcon "tragic", either. But that's about it.
