Doomsday Clock?
« on: October 16, 2017, 12:31:37 PM »
I got a Comic Shop News after my first trip to a shop in a while yesterday and saw there's a Watchmen/DCU crossover going. What's the word on that? Anything to be interested in, even if you, like me, think it's a bit of a silly idea? How was the first issue?

They seemed to have been building up to it for over a year now. The whole DC rebirth thing is supposedly caused by Doc Manhattan.

There's a few videos on yout ube breaking it down

So far, Reverse Flash has broken into the Bat cave, beaten Batman to within an inch of his life and then vanished to come back screaming that he'd seen God right before being skeletonized. We see clear hints of Dr Manhattan. We also had a story of a Mr Oz playing some sort of role that I cannot even begin to explain and it's turning out to be Jor-El?????????

Best guess is that Dr Manhattan has been elevated to deity and there are hints that the entire nu-52 awas a creation of his - a timeleine likley and it counts down to something along the lines of SUperman ahving to conivnce jhim of his humanity - or at least that's what youtube says (which frankly sounds quite cool)

Picked up the first issue just now.
It just seems like one of those books ppl are going to be talking about, and i'm going to wish i'd read/end up reading after the fact, so i'm just gonna go ahead and do it.
The Johns/Frank combo doesnt hurt either.

I enjoyed it. At the end of the day, the original Watchmen isn't the Bible or Koran. I don't care if DC gets as much out of it as they can. If the controversy is Alan Moore's feelings, then it shouldn't even register in a debate as to whether a story should be told.

Maybe nostalgia is the reason why I enjoyed it so much. But the story and new characters definitely felt like they fit in the existing universe.

FUCKING DIGUSTING

I'll go with interesting/pretty good for the first issue.
It did a nice job of setting the mood.

I've seen a lot of ppl online complain at how 'dense' the issue was.
That kinda cracks me up.
Today's comics do tend toward larger panels and splash pages.
The original Watchmen certainly did not.
The first issue at least, was faithful to that.
I'll be watching to see if it (the look of the comic) continues.

Well it's already issue #2 and Johns writing is like watching a freakin movie with all the references removed unless you watch another related movie.
Furthermore by the latest issue, Johns misses Alan Moore's point in the original Watchmen.
Adding salt to injury, Gary Frank (or likely again John's story boarding) does little to make the transition from the Watchman universe to the mainstream DCU. I re-read it and unless you read Veidt's statement, you wouldn't know they moved into the mainstream DCU. There was no sense of awe or wonder. Book #1-2 felt forced.... likely for money reasons.

"We are in another universe? Oh ok. That's just Tuesday. Move along...."

BTW, according to Ozy, Lex Luthor is the smartest man on the planet. I am not sure if this is his homage to the JL cartoons where Luthor was depicted as such.
