Cap is interesting in that, while he is heavily trained, I don't think I've ever seen or heard of a story in which we saw any of his mentors other than Dr. Erskine and General Phillips maybe.

Is that the new Hydra Cap stuff?  Let's stick with pre-Secret Empire shit.

I know its not what you're looking for, but post wake up, i'd say Nick Fury, Sam Wilson, both helped Cap get used to the modern world.

An NCO named SGT Duffy was his first real leader out in the field:

You'd think he'd have been taught by some of the best, but I think part of Cap's skill comes from the SSS effects on his brain. He could have applied that to any field, but he chose combat and seems to have about as many notable mentors as say Reed Richards or any of the mostly mentorless science types. I'm sure people showed him a few tricks here or there, but I imagine by the time he went into the ice he was heads and shoulders above his instructors.

Some of you guys have a strange (and incorrect) idea of what exactly a mentor is

Or, we're just answering the question as best we can.
Like the 'best merc' thread, many of the characters didnt meet the technical definition of a mercenary.
-shrug-

In my example, an NCO's job (one of his many) is actually to teach and mentor his Soldiers, so i'm fairly spot on.

Prefreezing I can't name a one!  And that's odd considering the numerous styles he supposedly knows.  There's never been a story of him needing ot help someone who's trained him per say Like Logan with Ogun.  Aside, from basic military hand to hand I wouldn't put him at the level he's at if it weren't for his Serum.  He sure couldn't have mastered Judo in the Decades he was frozen and things like visualization for training wasn't something considered for that time period under their training.

I had this discussion at KNC just recently.
Cap had boxing/judo instruction prior to being sent into the field. The SS allowed hin to take that basic training (no pun intended) and turn it into something incredibly effective.

Which, is essentially pretty basic.  I mean how long was his Judo and boxing instruction?  Compare his boxing to say some of the boxers you know.  Which, we all know that most boxers generally started pretty young.  Floyd for example has been boxing since he was 7 and he's 40 now.  Compared to the rushed training of Conor. Which, I think would be a better comparison of Cap in Both disciplines.  And don't forget that he was also a rather unathletic to begin with.  Which, would also affect his learning curve.  But, then the SS serum did affect his brain as well would enhance that curve and help with the muscle memory.
