What were THE movies of the 00s?
« on: September 08, 2017, 07:18:02 AM »
A little over 7 1/2 years removed from the 00s, asking you to guesstimate what movies, in another 10-20 years ppl will look at and say
'yeah thats a 00s movie. The feel, the tech, the actors, the fashion, the soundtrack etc.. '.

Looking for that decade's Footloose/Breakfast Club/Goonies/ET/Rambo...the movies you think will capture that decade in pop culture.

Comedies:

Anchor Man
Wedding Crashers
Super Bad
40 Year Old Virgin
(and to a lesser extent, Knocked Up)
Borat
Super Troopers
Tropic Thunder (though, am I just saying that because I think it's hilarious and will be remembered as such? It's not necessarily what's being asked for, though)
Scary Movie series and those awful parody movies that came in its wake
Maybe a Wes Anderson flick (Tenebaums, I'd say if so)

Blockbusters:

Pirates of the Caribbean
Transformers
Fast & Furious
LoTR Trilogy
Raimi Spiderman 1 & 2

Iron Man (but maybe more a peak at the '10s)
300

Dramas:

Crash/Babel
Almost Famous
Eternal Sunshine (?)
Castaway
There Will Be Blood (?)
Little Miss Sunshine (w/Sideways, etc - really sincere, "troubled" dramadies)

Kids:

Finding Nemo
Shrek

I had a bit of a hard time because I don't really think of the kind of movies being talked about in the OP are seriously "good" movies, but I totally know what Riv is talking about. But do I just have a kind of unimpressed view of them because they're from the 80s and I don't get the big deal about the 80s? Does a 2000s list get to be comprised of better movies, or should I be giving the tonal equivalents?

I felt like the first Rami Spidey very much captures the Era of the early 00's.

The thing is, decades aren't the best demarcations. Think the real feel of a decade is the 5 to the 5. So Rami Spidey nails a feeling of late 90's early 00's that wasn't true of the later 00's. Though that may not be the equivalent.

Eternal Sunshine I think is a great pick. Donnie Darko, except that's a throw back to the 80's. Kill Bill definitely has legs, but again, that's a bit of a throw back in and of itself. It's the era of Wes Anderson's meteoric rise, and his unique aesthetic. Royal Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic. Mean Girls probably is the most in line with some of Riv's more youth focused picks. The Hangover was a big deal.

Maybe, if anything though, this will be the time period looked back upon as really getting the Superhero movies ball rolling, for however long that runs it's course. Iron Man, Nolan Batman movies, etc.

Nobody has mentioned Traffic yet? That seems like a quintessential 00s film to me

Oh yeah, I'd definitely add The Hangover to my comedies list.

Fair point on the 5 years thing - that lets us separate the Wilsons/Vaughn/Stiller/Ferrell comedy era from the Apatow-crew era and that sort of thing.

Mean Girls is a fucking EXCELLENT pick. It's the 00s in the same way Clueless was the 90s

The Dark Knight: Widely considered to be the best comic film ever. It's impact continues to be felt.
Iron Man: An MCU miracle movie. Lots was riding on this and Marvel hit a home run.
Means Girls:Lindsay Blowhan peaked with this film.
Harry Potter series: Consistently good films that still deliver to this day.
LOTR trilogy: One of the best series of films ever made, some say the best.
Spider-man 2: Widely considered the best Spider-man film ever.
No Country for Old Men: Amazing film with one of the best villains ever.
40 year old virgin: Set in motion the Apatow comedy empire.

Yes. So many of those I didn't even think of, and so many of those are huge. Think I reference Jason Bourne on a weekly bases. "Where are you?" my friend will ask. "Jason Bourning" I'll say. It's these kind of avoidance tactics that make a relationship strong.
