Need laptop advice
« on: August 11, 2017, 08:49:10 PM »
I'm back in Canada, at least for a while. But I'm also stuck in the boonies. I need a new laptop (my old one is 7 years old and dying).

I'd like to spend less than CAD $1,400 all in (sales tax, shipping, etc.) I like a big screen, but I always do my work at my main desk. I don't laptop on the go, or bring it anywhere. However, I tend to move from country to country suddenly, and so a desktop is a no go. My next two years are looking especially itinerant, so hooking up external monitors might not be ideal. Thus, I'd like the max screen size.

I'd like to be able to do some casual gaming from time to time. But I doubt I'd be trying to play the newest games at the highest settings.

So what I'm looking for is:

**17.3 Laptop
**NOT a gaming laptop (or at least something that does not LOOK like one--there are times others need to see it, and it can't be some kinda rainbow nerdgasm monstrosity)
**8 GB of RAM (don't really think I'll need more) of any speed
**Discrete GPU (doesn't need to be latest--but some are saying the new Maxwell series from Nvidia is so much better than the Pascal it's worth waiting for and getting)
**Intel CPU (again, don't need latest and greatest--might even consider AMD if it seems right)
**256 GB SSD and 500 GB + HDD (Or just a 512 GB SSD)
**1920x1080 Display (IPS ideally, but could consider TN)
**Don't care about weight
**Happy to go refurb or used if there is a good deal
**MUST HAVE UNILINGUAL ENGLISH KEYBOARD (fellow Canadians will understand how sometimes you can order online and get the fucked up Bilingual French/English keyboard if you order from Canadian sites)

I'm in the boonies. I don't want to find the long ride into the nearest city too many times. So ideally, I get an SSD already installed. Plus, I've never opened up a computer myself...
However, from what I am hearing, I have several problems. I really want an SSD, but flash is scarce and SSDs are generally being reserved for gaming rigs. 17.3" laptops that aren't gaming rigs are a big hole in the market, and this is especially true in the limited Canadian market where hard-to-find SSDs are being reserved for mobile workstations and high-end gaming rigs, especially at the 17.3" level.
So I might have to order from the US and figure out the customs shit. Maybe ebay.
Others have said that given my exacting specs, I'd do so much better at 15.6 since that is the most popukar size by far and has the most options and deals, especially in Canada. Many have said that since I don't move my computer much, a 15.6 plus buying a used LCD external monitor at whatever location I'm at, even if I had to buy a few and never sell them (just throw them away), would still leave me ahead of the game.
If I want 17.3, esp. in Canada with a pre-installed SSD, then maybe I need to go over $1400 Canadian. Or really consider buying the SSD separately and installing myself.

Sorry for the quickly types post. But suggestions welcome.

8GB of RAM isn't enough if you expect to use this for the next several years. You might be better off ordering it in the US with someone you trust and having it shipped. Tons of back to school sales right now for much better than what you're requiring for less than 1000 US.

1000 US is still like 1300 Canadian + 15% tax = $1450 CDN + ~$100 shipping + 1550 + ~$150 Duty = ~ $1700 CDN

But yeah, US has so many better options. You think I'll need 16GB to future proof for next 4 years?

(Don't mean able to play hottest new games, ofc.)

12 GB at least, but I'd go for 16 GB. You'd need a decent discrete graphics card for gaming, so I'm not even factoring that in because you said you weren't looking for it.
