Favorites among the literary giants of the current era?
« on: August 05, 2017, 05:50:13 PM »
This isn't necessarily just your favorite authors - some personal favorites may not fit the bill,  and dead/retired writers need not be mentioned. That said, there's still probably going to be room for debate about who counts.

Out of the critically anointed titans of contemporary literature - think Cormac McCarthy, Don DeLillo, Philip Roth, Toni Morrison, Margarett Atwood, Thomas Pynchon, etc - who are your favorites, or who do you not care for, what are your favorite/least works among them?

Well don't be a salty lil' philistine about it, make your case for some "etc's". I'm sure someone will eventually wind up debating King if this topic gets some responses, for example.

Cormac McCarthy, Leonard Elmore until a few years ago

McCarthy is my favorite among those I've read, and as such I've read more of his stuff than the others at this point. I'll go with the consensus that Blood Meridian is his best, but the first section of The Crossing is as good as anything I've read by anyone. I've read all of his stuff from Blood Meridian through The Road, except No Country for Old Men.

The only Roth book I've read was The Plot Against America, which was quite-good-not-great. At some point I'd like to read American Pastoral.

I read 1/2 - 2/3 of Gravity's Rainbow, as far as Pynchon goes. There were some really awesome sections,  but also some painfully tedious ones,  and it eventually wore me down with its constant introduction of new characters. It also had the most disgusting scene I've ever read. I'll get back to it one of these days, still have my copy.

I'm about to start White Noise, which will be my overdue first DeLillo.

Is Dave Eggers in the club? I really enjoyed And You Shall Know our Velocity but haven't read anything else by him. Found a copy of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius the other day and a friend who has great taste said it was a wonderful book IIRC. The woman who I bought it from also said it was wonderful, and not to get any water on it after midnight.

I haven't read him, but my understanding is that he could belong in the conversation,  yeah.

John Le Carre. Don't be thrown off by the fact that he's a genre writer. He has an amazing grasp on human nature.

J.G. Ballard, though he died recently.

I like what I've read of Leonard Elmore.

Tom Robbins is pretty good.

I've only read Pynchon's Crying of Lot 49, and couldn't get into it.

No salt, just too lowbrow for this topic. Its like when ppl discuss the oscar contenders each year, 99% of which i'd re-watch Suicide Squad over.

I find most of the stuff ppl are supposed to like (and i imagine discussing while pretending to sound like Thurston Howell III) pretty boring.
