Read the first Flashman book if you've never tried the series. It's not sci-fi (historical fiction, in fact), but it's hilarious, appalling, and some of the most vivid historical adventure writing I've ever read. The title protagonist is a piece of shit,  and not in the "he's actually more of a loveable rogue/rascal" way most anti-heroes wind up being, but his narratives voice is so damn good that his charisma shines in spite of some really rotten stuff hey gets into. He basically gets Forest Gump-ed into major military campaigns of the Victorian era and used to tear holes in old romantic notions of the period. I just finished Book 7 and have #8 in waiting for after a few other reads.

Scourge, you should also check out Starship Troopers and The Forever War. Starship Troopers has a very different tone from the movie. It's like a sci-fi action version of Plato's Republic. The Forever War was written as a respectful response to it.

Anything by Terry Pratchett?

It's funny how not very well read I am, considering.

read some Prachett, overall enjoyed what I've read but Going Postal is the best thing of his I've read. I also want to read Small Gods.

Flashman and Starship Troppers. Actually went to the library yesterday and couldn't find any of the previous mentions but maybe one of these is there.

Considering what? How intelligent you think you are?

I just finished The Automatic Detective.

I loved the idea behind it, and the main character. But the actual story wasn't that interesting. None of the characters outside of Mack seemed to be that fleshed out, and the female protagonist was a real deus ex machina.

I was hoping I would like it as much as Soon I Will Be Invincible.
