What's going on with this guy? Was he powered down? Seems to be stuck in a Dark Dimension now, but he definitely doesn't seem at Hickman levels. And he uses weapons?

Basically in the most recent comic we found out that using magic, especially black magic, eats you up on a spiritual level. We also, found out that early in Strange's career he and Wong created an entity that he would redirect all that damage to so Strange didn't have to pay the price. When that went south Wong secretly recruited a group of monks that the damage would redirect to and they would share.

Also, we found out that there was group from an alt-reality traveling the multiverse and destroying everything magic related. Eventually they find their way to the main universe and do a pretty good solid job of eliminating almost all of magic before Strange and a few others defeat him.

So after that Strange disbands the monks and the entity they created escapes. Strange realizes he can't just use magic so flagrantly since he has to let it regrow in our universe. So now he tries to use lesser spells and magical items. He can tap into magic more but he runs risk of harming himself and burning out chunks of magic when its trying to regrow.

They destroyed pretty much every magical artifact in the universe too. Like unless they do some timey whimey stuff they really shouldnt recover. More then likely will just be ignored.

Probably be a story that accelerates the recovery as every magic user is neutered...well except scarlet witch as they basicslly have ignored the story and she's currently possessed by Chthon

Sounds dumb. Any explanation for why a few hundred evil gods and demons and such aren't invading the greatly weakened 616 universe? Almost no magical defenses sounds like a field day for the Dormammus of the multiverse.

Well the badguys decimated other dimensions pretty badly before hand. Also magic was flourishing and coming back pretty quickly after the story. The whole point seemed mostly to give Dr Strange a reason to not always be coming out full force.

It's a shame, too,  I liked Aaron's Wolverine/X-related stuff so much, but he's kinda lost me with his crappy ideas since branching out.

Like it was said, other dimensions got messed up pretty bad too, but there was a story line with that exact plot pretty much. Baron Mordo, Dormammu, and several other demons all came after Strange.

I'm a few issues behind on it, but I've thoroughly enjoyed the series. It's one of the only few books from Marvel that I've been reading.

Yeah that was in the follow up story. Basically like 5 villains decided to go for Strange and he kept getting away by the skin of his teeth because they kept getting in each others way.
