It's great to see Rodan back to his badass self. He looks amazing.

I legit marked out when Rodan came out of the volcano. I don't really know why, but I did.

I bet I know why. Because Rodan has really fallen in stock and visibility since the Showa era, when he was one of the "Big Three" (or Four if you counted Ghidorah); he was able to fight Godzilla one-on-one (in fact, it seemed like he was winning that fight), and was his equal partner against Ghidorah.

Come the Heisei era, he wasn't as powerful, being fairly quickly dispatched by both Godzilla and Mechagodzilla (who had joined the "Big Five"). But he did get a beam weapon, and his role was very plot important and dramatic.

In the Millennium era, he didn't make it until the very last film, in a small role, and again got his ass kicked (though at least he didn't die this time). Compare this to the rest of the Big Five; Mothra, Mechagodzilla, and Ghidorah all had important, powerful roles that were integral to their films' plots.

By joining the Legendary films, he's continuing his membership in the select group of kaiju that have been in every era of Godzilla. And from this trailer and comments made by the crew, they've done a lot to restore him to his Showa glory days. Just like his original film, he's again closely associated with volcanoes, which shows they did their homework; and apparently he's supposed to be as powerful as Godzilla again, and the director even has a soft spot for him.
