Fast and Furious 8! Rock & Statham spin-off official!
« on: April 13, 2017, 05:22:00 AM »

Caught an early screening -

Will wait for opening day before spoilers.

General thoughts: At first I considered myself a traitor for really not liking this one at all, it took about an hour for me to get into it. In the opening, Dom was dumb, Hobbs had become a sitcom dad (toothless was the old testament beat). The rest of the crew showed up as caricatures of themselves. But it settled into a bombastic groove as time went on. Kurt Russel still steals every scene he's in and Scott Eastwood while played as chump has enough of his dad in him to have an edge. Statham and the Rock battle to 1UP throughout and somehow develop a bromance of machismo bordering on Rocky III or Roadhouse levels. - In a better world, this movie starred just them. Anyway, it ends world's better than it starts, so It's true what they say, " It don't matter if you win by an inch or a mile. Winning's winning."

Not all perfect though, there's some plane hi-jinks near the end that had me rolling my eyes for how tone breaking they were. And my heart has left the series along with another character's graceful bowing out, still a world of fun, laughs and "Ohhh-Ahhh" moments of brutality from the Rock and Statham!

Oh and Brian is briefly addressed, about as well as they could. So props to them for not sweeping it under the rug.

Strange how this series has morphed into a Rock and Statham franchise.

I can see how the remaining team have become caricatures, they've been like that the last two movies. Roman worked better as a sidekick to Brian, Tej doesn't seem to do much of anything, Letty seemed like she was legitimately retarded.

I liked the series much more once it ended up as a parody of itself.

Definitely. It was the best of both worlds. It still had the small dog in a big fight vibe of the first few movies but with a real sense of urgency and stakes, but hadn't descended into parody like the later ones.

Haven't seen any of these and no immediate plans to, but I will say that the critic review in the local paper is the opposite of the above op description. Essentially says it starts fun but peters out.

I also googled last night why they keep making these and the last one was like the 5th highest grossing box office movie of all time (not adjusted for inflation). Not only that, but the last four films have continuously out grossed the one right before it by a significant margin. Though I doubt it will continue, if the trend did go on, this would stand to be the highest grossing movie of all time. WTFF?

How do they address Brian?

It feels cheap, but Roman states, "Brian would know what to do." when they find out about Dom betraying them. Letty shoots down the idea, because Brian and Mia have a life now outside the game and they as a family agreed that's how it should be. Which of course doesn't make sense, considering the stakes, but what else were they going to do...

They should have had the team go looking for him only to find him and his car wrapped around a tree.

That would have been worth a laugh or two.
