At this point even Marvel knows it. They're not even attempting to put interesting or successful talent on the books.

To be honest, I've always thought this line was kind of a piece of shit. Or, rather, only very rarely did I think it was doing anything very interesting or novel. I enjoyed Ellis' Fantastic Four, and then Hickman's Ultimates and that's pretty much it. Everything else I tried was just retarded gore porn or shock value incest babies 'n shit. Blech.

It ran into the problem that all of these 'everything goes!' spin off universe run into  -- they went to big and too stupid, they lost focus on the thing that drew people to the world in the first place (the characters) focusing too much on the notion of 'blowing up the status quo' until it was a generic post-apocalyptic landscape peopled with superheroes.

Current Ultimates is HORRIFICALLY bad and Fialkov's stuff was phoned in in the extreme.

Same thing happened to Wildstorm, same thing happened to New Universe and Valiant (ultraverse was always shit).

The real truth of it is that lines like this can't really exist anymore. Interesting, new talent doesn't want to create IP for anyone but themselves anymore, but so much of a line like this is predicated on doing new stuff, on experimenting. As the main lines become more open to formal experimentation and practical concerns make experimenting with new characters, ideas, or even set pieces prohibitive in a company owned environment.

Basically, let it die as an imprint and let Bendis keep doing Ultimate Spider Man because people still seem to enjoy that.
THIS!...sadly it started off strong, but they needed to let Galactus kill it...and didn't!

Ultimate Spider-Man and New Ultimates are the only books worth checking out.  Miles Morales fees like the character thats keeping the line afloat.

The Ultimate line started out as kind of an interesting concept- Marvel without all the continuity shit that can often hamstring good storytelling. Of course, in about ten years it got just as complex and stupid as regular comics, thus showing us perfectly why RETCONS AND REBOOTS NEVER FUCKING WORK.

Ultimate Spider-Man was actually okay, story-wise. I mean, I could never read Bendis' David Mamet-speak for more than a couple panels before throwing down the book in a rage, but they managed a good long run that never quite looked THAT stupid. Well, except that time Gwen Stacy got eaten by a Carnage, and we had shitloads of symbiotes within four years.

The Ultimates had a very solid "Big Screen" feel, but was basically the Michael Bay of comic books almost immediately, but with the addition of the worst Garth Ennis-like traits of "haha let's do something EXTREME and CRAZY!" It was basically all shock by a certain point, and that got started REALLY early. Basically as soon as Pym started beating Wasp and chasing her with bug spray.

The Ultimate X-Men felt more like someone going "hey, remember all those X-Men books from the Claremont era? Weren't they good? Well here's the same stories, but done in a big rush and with worse storytelling!" They lost me when Sabretooth was killed like three times, and they turned Beast blue in a casual half-assed manner.

The Ultimate basically the Avengers of the Ultimate Universe have become New Warrior lite basically Spiderman( Miles Morales), a New Black Window, Kitty Pride, Cloak  & Dagger and Bombshell. Needless to say I say I refuse to waste my time and money supporting drekk like this. As for the Ultimate FF last time I checked it had Susan Storm as the only original FF member, Dr Doom, Iron Man, the Falcon and Phil Coulson. I also heard it was canceled due to low sales, I guess I wasn't the only one that thought it was drekk.

Didn't someone use a grapefruit as a silencer in The All-New Ultimates?
