It's good, possibly very good, but I think I read too many hype reviews going in so my expectations were too high to be blown away. If I'd read nothing and gone in expecting another standard Wolverine film I'd possibly have shat myself with giddiness but alas.

Old Man Xavier is the highlight.

Cheers.

This was my situation.  I hated the first 2 and didn't want to see this one but my buddy wanted to see it opening night, so we went.

I expected amother pg-13 mess of a story but what we got was multiple times better than the usual. I was pleasantly surprised,  I guess. I never looked into any information regarding this movie or watched a single trailer.

You guys are pretty demanding. This is a 94 on RT. It's superb

I think the 94 is more of an indication that it has the necessary elements that one hopes for in a good movie to be good and none of the really awful elements that ruin movies. Thus most critics rated if favorably, but RT at the end of the day is still an indicator of pass/fail. 94% agree that it is good, most would vote thumbs up over thumbs down. Give it a pass. Is that a resounding endorsement on their individual behalf's though? I don't thinks so. Moreover, I don't know how many of those critics would qualify it as superb. Which I personally do not.

All that said, had it not done well on RT, no way would I have gone to see it in theaters. The good score there was the only real indication I had that it wouldn't suck like the previous ones.

Though again, it was good.

Was this the first time the third movie in the Trilogy was better than the first two?

I was debating this the night of. I couldn't think of any other trilogy where the third surpassed the first and second.

I would say RT score is a good gauge of quality as opposed to just passing. Even most separate reviews, anYT, Guardian etc are quite glowing, Saying it transcends most comic films. The acting and character growth here makes Evans Cap and etc. look like child's play and well regarded critics agree. Simply calling it good is a bit of an understatement considering the profound critical appraisal nearly everywhere. I don't see why this film has to be dragged down because of the prior two when there is a minimal connection

IDK character growth? Wolverine goes from sort of a dick who hates himself to a little bit less  of a dick. From reluctant to help to willing to help and care if I'm being less catty in my appraisal. And it is good to see. Though I think that's been his arc in every single Wolverine movie and in the fist X movie. Better here than in those previous entries but still pretty standard stuff on that front. Xavier was a really great and unique take on the character tho.

Though glad it is getting such positive critical reviews. I mean I was into it so I'm not going to try to say it wasn't good. Just think you and perhaps the critics you mentioned might have gotten more out of than me.

I also saw Get Out the night before which was pretty great so I went in with the bar set pretty high on movie experiences. But they're like apples and oranges film wise.

HINTS OF SPOILERS:

Here's my problem: They end up making such a big deal of Logan wanting to spare Lara his own life ("Don't be what they made you", etc), but... everything shitty about Logan's life is actually Xavier's fault, not his or the people who made him. Xavier is the one who accidentally killed everyone and put an end to everything they had.

Also... WHY were there no more mutants? We get the doctor guy saying he did it by accident, but... why/how?

THAT SAID... the first act/hour-or-so was god damn, motherfucking BRILLIANT. Can't say enough about how fantastic and enthralling it is. The whole movie is great, but the establishing act is superb.

And I'd put the Lara/Logan vs The Reavers scene from the ranch in Mexico (when we first really see Lara in action) at just a bit below the airport scene in Civil War. It's THAT good.

Best Xman movie ever. Kids at the end were unnecessary though.

It wasn't an accident. They learned to suppress mutations and put the appropriate chemicals to do so in all sorts of consumer goods. He directly explains this.

The movie required a ton of exposition but I thought all of it was done pretty well. Sometimes seemed a little heavy handed like the cell phone video having such good editing etc but then it is 2029 in the movie so there's probably an app. Thought the depiction of the future was pretty reasonable compared to other depictions.

I thought the airport scene was kindergarten stuff compared to the brutality of Laura.

They directly explain it as the guys were suppressing and shutting down mutations with artificial sweeteners and etc

I'm a bit biased as Wolverine is my fave but even as a mute I thought the little girl had a Stranger Things like performance. Primal rage, and she had a nice little character arc. Did not feel like a somewhat tired hero film at all.
