Are you an athlete or are you athletic?
« on: September 29, 2016, 10:54:44 AM »

Heard a radio morning show going over this the other day, and been meaning to ask.

They went all over the place on the subject. Some things that caught my attention:

Athletes actively play sports.
Well what is a sport then? Is lifting weights a sport?
Sometimes.
Power lifting, weight lifting like the olympics...
Body building?
No thats just to look good.
Its called a sport, though.
Its not in the olympics.
Neither is football.

And so on...
They were actually pretty funny ripping on each other.
Even went into the end of ROCKY III "You fight great, but i'm a great fighter" scene.

Personally, i dont think i'm an athlete. I dont play/like sports all that much. I technically can, i guess, but have no desire to.
I like to work out and run, and learned to box and wrestle, but not to compete. The Army made me learn combatives but i'd never participate in "tournaments" they had.

A lot of you guys work out but, i've no idea if you play any sports, and am curious where you stand on defining athletic vs athlete, and which you are.

I'd say the key difference is an athlete competes. That introduces the idea of periodization, specialization, downtime, and comparison against others.

Bodybuilding is more of a "beauty" competition.

I don't think you have to compete to be an athlete. You do if you want to know at what athletic level you are however. Athletics, to me, cover any activity that requires physical exertion in direct competition with someone else, be it for time, points, etc...With the exception of speed walking. Going as fast as you can, without actually going as fast as you can, is just ridiculous.

I'm no athlete. Boxed in high school, lifted weights on and off my whole life. Ran (reluctantly) while in the army. Like to play basketball, football, volleyball, etc...Haven't competed at any since I was a kid.

I consider myself athletic. I work out regularly. I don't know if I would consider myself an athlete. I do participate in a couple adventure races every year but those are less about beating others and more about beating your own personal best.

That falls under athletics too, as far as I'm concerned. There is still usually an overall ranking.

True but other than the the elite runners people really don't care about their rankings. I also would consider it disingenuous if I called my an athlete when I just do them for fun and motivation.

For a good 23 years of my life i was a dedicated 2 sport athlete(Much more dedicated to basketball than baseball though). I competed at a very high level in basketball and a slightly lower level in baseball. I consider myself athletic but no longer an athlete.

Baseball was actually my strongest sport but stopped playing in high school to focus on basketball.
