The Good Place: Hopefully Won't Be Bad
« on: September 21, 2016, 05:53:18 PM »
I love the concept of the show: woman arrives in heavenly afterlife by mistake (or it might secretly be a test of worth).

It isn't heaven. Most religions only understood the nature of the afterlife at a 5% accuracy rate. One dude tripping on shrooms once guessed 95% of it, and Michael the Architect keeps the guys portrait on a wall to honor him.

The concept is very humorous... I love the ideas being floated... but the pilot ep was just OK.

I liked it a little, at least enough to come back.  I wonder if the condescending woman with the monk is also there by mistake and just (slightly) better at faking it than Kristen Bell.

There's a possibility of that. I have a theory that every soulmate pair is one good person and one bad person. This gives each pair a chance to redeem the bad person by teaching them what they need to know. For example, the rich philanthropist woman seems like a huge phony. And she gave non-stop. She is paired up with the Buddhist monk who has taken a vow of silence and seems very genuine.

The hole in that theory? The chaos created in the good place seems centered 100% around the main character's bad choices. Granted, it could just be that every other "bad" person is just better at faking. She is extraordinarily selfish considering she knows for a fact that eternal damnation will occur if she doesn't turn things around morally.

Some of the jokes fall flat. But the premise is strong and seems to have a lot of thought put into it (expressed mainly through her ethics professor soulmate).

Assuming things aren't a test, I see a parallel to What Dreams May Come. When you die, your mental state can place you in hell. The main character's bad actions seem to warp the reality of the good place (giant lady bugs, flying shrimp, trash storms, rampaging giraffes). The bad place might just be where shitty people torture themselves unintentionally for eternity, punished by how their shittiness makes horrible things happen.

And the good place allows for porn yet no curse words... but as ethics guy said, the profanity ban might be just for their good place based on what most of the people wanted. Other good places may allow it.

We really don't see the other ppl by themselves to really know how they really are.  Little Easter egg I liked how when they we showing things that give you good and bad points one was staying loyal to the Browns gave you a lot of good points.

Hahahaha, missed that one. I saw genocide had huge negative points, and remembering your sister's birthday was positive points.

Tolkien may be right I was thinking the one girl was the phoney not her soulmate. Nice twist.

I like the story progression of the latest ep. Eternal paradise apparently isn't perfect even when working right, and Chidi (sp?) made it purely on his studies/written work... which was ultimately a failure. Him being paired with an unethical person who he can actually apply his ethical teachings to (and maybe rework some ideas) must be planned.

The reveal at the end was great too.

Just watched the first episode. I like it so far. It seems like a spiritual successor to My Name is Earl.

Not comedy-wise but in philosophy.  I'm 4 episodes in and its got some parallels with This is the End too.

Yeah. Again philosophically it touches on some similar ideas about the nature of being good and bad.

Still liking this show. Subtle bombshell dropping though... Michael reveals to Tahani that points stop accumulating once you die. Which means Eleanor can't "earn" a spot no matter how hard she tries (and I genuinely love that her character woke up and is trying now).

The comedy is overall mild, but the show just has a fun vibe while probing what it means to be "good", what drives people to do good, and what people expect from paradise.

The Parks & Rec creative team really have a gem here. This show has a lot of heart, and the Bad Place stuff has me intrigued. So Eleanor being there is a simple switch? Yikes. Michael was ready to keep her, but now that the Bad Place has the "good" Elenor, who knows.

Yeah I'm really enjoying the show. I'm not sure how many seasons they will get out of the show though.
