Does Savage Dragon have a point?

I mean; does Superman really need to go on a patrol?

Why can't he just sit at a donut shop and use his x-ray vision to check things out from the comfort of a corner booth?

Just that good old Protestant work ethic drilled into him by his hard working mid-western farmer parents. Anything else would just feel lazy.

Just seeing Superman flying overhead is probably enough to deter would-be criminals from doing something illegal. He also serves as a symbol to the people of Metropolis. So I disagree with Dragon.

SM does need to fly around. While SM powers has a lot of advantages, there's ways around it like being in a Sewer filled with lead pipes, there's also where  discernment comes to the equation between a car muffler backing up and a gunshot. Finally there's the factor of SM flying to give people hope or to stop criminals from even attempting to commit the crime.

Yet he was able to hear Lois call his name from the other side of the world.
Yes he could sit his as still in one location and just listen or look through walls.
He has a speed component that a lot of times is overlooked.

Yeah but Superman don't exactly do patrols through the sewers does he?

As far as a symbol; you could argue that a Superman who just "seems to come out of nowhere when you are doing a crime" might be a more potent symbol than one that has to fly around and "just so happens to be there" when you do it.

But inspiring people is a good point.
