Comic book versions. Let's say Loki has the standard magical ability he had when he was an adult. Both are ready and armed with spells and swords, fight takes place in neutral territory, no prep - it's a straight-up duel to the death.

Loki has the physical advantage and knows more varied styles of magic. His schemes are generally more complex and have a better success rate. It would be a fight but I take Loki pretty definitively.

Movies have played him up as a weakling physically and not really all that great at scheming  - he's just the most charismatic actor in the Marvel U alongside RDJ

Comic Loki is a beast. He wins

Pretty much.  Malekith is something of a watered-down Loki.

A weakling who can kick the crap out of Captain America and can at least hang with Thor.

He is a charismatic actor but let's see what his scheming has done.  He has taken the throne of Asgard twice so far.  The first time, he managed to take Asgard, banish his brother, and even kill him (for a few seconds) before starting a false flag operation to secure his place as a hero for his people.  He only failed because Thor managed to come back.  The second time around has been successful so far and he managed to do it while faking his death and making sure no one knows.  The only other scheme was the invasion of New York where he had the Avengers tied up in fighitng each other before they regrouped.  He even did the typical "villain lets himself be captured so he can do shit from the inside" move.  He was pretty successful in everything he did up until about the last half hour of the movie.

Physically Loki should be able to absolutely ignore Captain America - it's a low showing for him to even have to break a sweat cif he can at least match Thor for a bit

Even matching Thor is questionable - it's hard to say how much of it is Thor and Loki knowing each other so well and the writers factoring in their brotherhood as opposed to Loki being powerful

Granted his schemes work in the moves but they feel mor e like they're there to move the plot along as opposed to his schemes being truly genius or dangerous. It's arguable but The Avengers and Thor's individual movies are great stuff, but they use a lot of convenient plot devices to get to really meaty material

Considering Cap is Cap, it's no surprise he was able to hang in there.  This goes along with the comics where Cap can also hang with him.  It's not like Loki didn't eventually have him dead to rights.

Didn't say they were evenly matched.

Superhero movies tend to revolve around the villains' plots.
