I'm exploring what I call the 'power-up paradox', perhaps best exemplified by Iron Man back in the day. Essentially, heroes often get explicit power ups but their relative standing essentially doesn't change. Ironically, Iron Man himself may have eventually escaped the 'Iron Man Syndrome' and probably ranks a bit higher in the hero hierarchy than he used to.
This problem also comes up when people start posting fights like 'Blue Marvel vs. DOS Doomsday', etc.
So, for example, is Superman more powerful now than he was under Byrne relative to the other DC heroes? If so, how much more? If he is basically at the same rank, why? Did every other hero get power ups that exactly match his?
Despite the title, I'm happy to use any and all other heroes as examples of this 'Power Up Paradox'.

Music, Movies, Tv and Books / Battlestar Galactica Ending
« on: September 30, 2018, 08:33:32 AM »
I've been rewatching this lately.
The ending is almost universally panned.
Do you agree? Is it really that unrealistic given what happens prior to it?

ICT / MCU Thor vs MCU Hela (no weapons)
« on: August 27, 2018, 09:24:14 AM »
In terms of intrinsic, full potential power, the MCU seems to offer contradictory evidence.

Hela was suggested as being more powerful due to being first born. It was also said that she draws power from Asgard, leaving us to wonder if Odin did or Thor ever would. However, Odin was said to be more powerful than Hela; and if I recall correctly, Odin suggested that Thor's power could exceed Odin's power level one day.

So I'm wondering whether Thor's own intrinsic power already does, or could in the future, exceed Hela's. Or is this an impossible comparison as Hela somehow draws special powers from Asgard (which has been destroyed) and Thor does not?

Debate / Is the USA Different? Why do Americans need guns?
« on: August 11, 2018, 12:56:47 PM »
For a long time I always felt that the USA should treat guns the way other countries do, and if they did, then gun violence would decline the same way. Sure, it's true that most gun deaths are the result of illegal firearm acquisitions. However, statistically, it always seemed obvious that if you reduce the total access to legal firearms, including buying back guns from the street like Australia did, then eventually even illegal access would become harder and gun deaths would decline.

However, over time I've come to question the above view. Not necessarily the logic of it--the tougher you get on legal access, illegal access will also become harder. Nevertheless, I've started to think that perhaps the USA is different than Europe here. Total gun deaths might go down, but perhaps not to the degree that it does in other countries; and law-abiding Americans, without access to self-defense, might actually suffer a lot more fear and intimidation as part of the process.

The USA has significantly less population density than Europe. In Europe, if someone invades your home or threatens you on the street, there are likely to be more people around, and closer. Sometimes in the USA you are on your own. Furthermore, US laws protect the innocent at the cost of making it harder to prosecute the guilty to a greater degree than many other countries. We can argue about whether this tradeoff is worthwhile, but it's part of US cultural DNA. In addition, the USA is more multicultural and multiracial than other countries. This diversity may have benefits, but it has traditionally created more social unrest and violence too. That's human nature. The combination of greater diversity and more difficult prosecutions due to legal protections, along with other factors, results in more street gangs and organized crime than other countries. Finally, there's always been something a bit wilder and more barbaric about the USA. This also has advantages and disadvantages, but may nonetheless result in ordinary citizens feeling more of a need for self-defense.

At any rate, I'm on the fence these days. I haven't reached a conclusion, and these are just some of the thoughts running through my head. I'm curious to hear what yours are.

Debate / Biology-based Population and Gender Group Differences
« on: August 06, 2018, 06:04:20 AM »
Do you believe that there are statistical differences between populations (racial/ethnic groups) and/or genders, that are based in biology? Are these differences relevant? Are they purely superficial? Just physical? What about psychological? Intellectual?

Should research in these areas be banned? Limited?

ICT / Black Adam vs. Shazam
« on: July 15, 2018, 09:48:24 AM »
So where do these two stand these days? Do we have any reason to believe that they have identical power sets despite their respective gifts having different sources?
Did we ever figure out whether Black Adam was powered up in WWIII?
Now that the canonical 'Captain Marvel equals Superman' seems to be fully in the rear view mirror, where do you feel BA and Shazam rank in the DCU these days? Are they weaker than Wonder Woman now? Slower? Still stronger than the Martian Manhunter? Equal to Orion?

ICT / Marvel vs. DC: Green Lantern Ring Battle
« on: June 24, 2018, 08:42:40 AM »
In six different alternate universes, the following never get Superhuman abilities, but are brought into a Green Lantern corps. and given a ring. After 15-20 year careers as GLs, they are brought together and engage in 3 on 3 battle. Try to somehow imagine that Thanos and Doom's personalities don't turn them into total villains that get kicked out of the Corps. Somehow they end up more like a Sinestro that never quite crosses enough lines to get booted out.

Clark Kent
Bruce Wayne
Hal Jordan

Victor Von Doom
Steve Rogers

Bonus: Rank the 6 in terms of formidability as a GL.

ICT / Wonder Woman and Orion vs. Superman and Supergirl
« on: June 19, 2018, 09:45:50 AM »
Current versions and typical gear, though WW has her shield and sword, too.

This is an 'end of the universe' battle where somehow these two teams have ended up on opposite sides, each believing they are right. Wonder Woman and Orion feel the fight is important and unavoidable enough that they are willing to kill and have gone into total warrior mode. It's submit or die.

Superman and Supergirl can see how serious WW and Orion are, and see no way out other than winning the fight.

How does this go?
