ICT / Superman vs. Hal Jordan
« on: March 30, 2018, 04:07:49 AM »
So Hal just beat an amped Zod fairly convincingly. Would you say Hal is, on the whole, now rated above Superman as the DCU's most powerful mainstream hero?

Or could this just be a "temporary" power-up? Or maybe Hal is just getting stroked in his own book but is not getting treated like the most powerful hero in other books?

So why not just have this out.

Is Orion really beyond Superman?

ICT / Who has hurt the Juggernaut?
« on: March 13, 2018, 02:37:14 AM »
Based on the Superman vs. Juggernaut thread, I'm curious as to just how invulnerable Juggs is normally shown as being. In addition, the crazy healing factor he was portrayed as having in at least one arc is also worthy of consideration.

So when has the Juggernaut been hurt? How was he hurt? Did it seem like he was hurt in a way that could have lead to him losing a fight, despite the healing factor he is sometimes given credit for having?

I remember that Nimrod hurt him. Hulk seemed to punch and hurt him once. Superman in a crossover punched him around a bit. Thor, otoh, couldn't do shit until he used magic to fuck with Juggernaut's enchantment.

Music, Movies, Tv and Books / What, at core, is wrong with the DCEU?
« on: December 14, 2017, 02:06:50 PM »
I see two major possible factors, that may be working in combination:

1) This stuff is really difficult to do, and Marvel simply just has a great team that has built a great formula. But it really is tough to duplicate--executive skillz and talent matter!

2) Marvel's characters and universe are intrinsically better suited to making great movies--the characters are less hokey. It's easier to make them funny. You don't have to work around their crazy names and/or weaknesses (Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, weak to YELLOW, etc.) Also, the DCU architecture has always been very 'Trinity' focused, which can cause problems.

Anything else?

Music, Movies, Tv and Books / MCU Reboot? How will they bring in the Xmen?
« on: December 14, 2017, 02:01:52 PM »
Will the MCU reboot and recast after Avengers 4? I imagine this would be a good way to bring in the Xmen and FF (if you want to bring in the FF--they aren't that cool, IMO.)
Or will they use some alternate universe shit?
One sticking point is that apparently they want to keep Guardians going as is.

Personally, I'd love to see them blow it all up and start again from scratch.

Game Cage / Need laptop advice
« on: August 11, 2017, 08:49:10 PM »
I'm back in Canada, at least for a while. But I'm also stuck in the boonies. I need a new laptop (my old one is 7 years old and dying).

I'd like to spend less than CAD $1,400 all in (sales tax, shipping, etc.) I like a big screen, but I always do my work at my main desk. I don't laptop on the go, or bring it anywhere. However, I tend to move from country to country suddenly, and so a desktop is a no go. My next two years are looking especially itinerant, so hooking up external monitors might not be ideal. Thus, I'd like the max screen size.

I'd like to be able to do some casual gaming from time to time. But I doubt I'd be trying to play the newest games at the highest settings.

So what I'm looking for is:

**17.3 Laptop
**NOT a gaming laptop (or at least something that does not LOOK like one--there are times others need to see it, and it can't be some kinda rainbow nerdgasm monstrosity)
**8 GB of RAM (don't really think I'll need more) of any speed
**Discrete GPU (doesn't need to be latest--but some are saying the new Maxwell series from Nvidia is so much better than the Pascal it's worth waiting for and getting)
**Intel CPU (again, don't need latest and greatest--might even consider AMD if it seems right)
**256 GB SSD and 500 GB + HDD (Or just a 512 GB SSD)
**1920x1080 Display (IPS ideally, but could consider TN)
**Don't care about weight
**Happy to go refurb or used if there is a good deal
**MUST HAVE UNILINGUAL ENGLISH KEYBOARD (fellow Canadians will understand how sometimes you can order online and get the fucked up Bilingual French/English keyboard if you order from Canadian sites)

I'm in the boonies. I don't want to find the long ride into the nearest city too many times. So ideally, I get an SSD already installed. Plus, I've never opened up a computer myself...
However, from what I am hearing, I have several problems. I really want an SSD, but flash is scarce and SSDs are generally being reserved for gaming rigs. 17.3" laptops that aren't gaming rigs are a big hole in the market, and this is especially true in the limited Canadian market where hard-to-find SSDs are being reserved for mobile workstations and high-end gaming rigs, especially at the 17.3" level.
So I might have to order from the US and figure out the customs shit. Maybe ebay.
Others have said that given my exacting specs, I'd do so much better at 15.6 since that is the most popukar size by far and has the most options and deals, especially in Canada. Many have said that since I don't move my computer much, a 15.6 plus buying a used LCD external monitor at whatever location I'm at, even if I had to buy a few and never sell them (just throw them away), would still leave me ahead of the game.
If I want 17.3, esp. in Canada with a pre-installed SSD, then maybe I need to go over $1400 Canadian. Or really consider buying the SSD separately and installing myself.

Sorry for the quickly types post. But suggestions welcome.

Ask The Staff / Can we go back to the old layout?
« on: July 17, 2017, 06:56:38 AM »
The new layout/color scheme thing, or whatever it is, is unspeakably bad. I don't think I need to elaborate, except perhaps for the color-blind and taste-impaired. But fuck 'em!
Or you could try a new scheme. I'm a fan of the classic, but if ya gots yer creative juices flowing and need a change, then go for it. But don't make it suck this time!

ICT / Five on Three Fight
« on: July 03, 2017, 12:03:56 AM »
Somehow I got into a thread (elsewhere) where I had to pick a team in the dark, and then argue that it could beat a surprise team of Thanos, Corvus Glaive, and Proxima Midnight.
I'm lazy, and not even sure my team can win. Let me know which team you think would win.

No Prep

Proxima Midnight

Doctor Strange (classic levels)
Doctor Fate (Kent Nelson)
Doctor Fate (Hector Hall at peak of his power and experience)
John Constantine

What ya think? Can the magic men do it? Or does Thanos stomp?

ICT / Five Choices!
« on: April 20, 2017, 08:54:13 AM »
A magic Genie let's you choose one of five possible wishes. (Recycling some ideas--I'm not especially creative.)

1) Cash Money Dollas!

You get $10 Billion in US Currency, after taxes. All legal. All yours, with no one else--especially your spouse--having any legal claim on it.

2) Roll Back the Clock!

Your physical age is reset to any point you'd like, going as low as fifteen, but you keep your memories and current cognitive abilities, perhaps amplified by the age reset if you have already lost a step to Father Time. You age normally from that point on. The Genie makes sure you are square with the Governments, though you might become famous. Medical testing shows conclusively that there is nothing to be learned by dissecting your body for science.

3) Beam Me Up!

Superpowers! You gain the ability to teleport any distance on Earth. You can port to any location you can clearly conceive of--seeing pictures of it will do! You never fuck up. You never port into walls. You can bring a maximum of 200Kg with you each time you port. However, teleportation does fatigue you. Longer ports tire you a bit more than shorter ones, and carrying more of your max load also increases fatigue. Also, too many ports over a short time will start to tire you quickly. When you are too tired, you can't port until you get some rest. You could make say 4 or 5 Paris to Los Angeles ports a day, spaced every 4 to 5 hours, with say half your max load, without pushing yourself.

4) Slow Rolling!

From this point forward, you age at half your normal rate: one year for every two years actually lived. Effects that do long term damage to your body--Sun, plaque build up in arteries, etc. all happen at half the normal rate. As with Option #2, medical testing will show there is nothing to be learned by putting you in a lab, and the Genie makes sure the government is onboard--you'll get ID as you need it, possibly with slight tweaks to your birth date as needed so that people aren't questioning your ID''s validity.

5) I Got Skillz!

You get an IQ of 200 or so, and the knowledge and skills needed to be about 20% better than best person the world has ever seen at any one intellectual or creative discipline: lawyer, poet, novel writer, investor, poker player, physicist, etc.

Which do you pick?
