DC Drones / Death of Superman animated movie

So I bought this a few days ago after hearing good things about it and I have to admit I thought it was great and had one of the best portrayals of Superman I'd ever seen.

Has anyone else watched the movie and if so what did you think?

Looking forward to the well set up sequel.

If I was nitpicking I'd say:

- They didn't have Doomsday start with one arm tied behind his back, which was always a great aspect to him defeating the League.
- Doomsday beating the full and proper League implies they are all a bunch of weaklings compared to Superman (though they sort of stagger this by having a few Leaguers show up at a time).
- Batman's mini-grenades destroy more of Doomsday's costume than Flash hitting Doomsday at super-speed multiple times with Hawkman's Mace.

ICT / Rogol Zaar vs. Doomsday (DoS version)

Okay so early days yet I know but Two-Face Terrax looks pretty formidable. His attacks really seem to be messing up Superman.

I'm going to call this in favour of Rogol Zaar. He comes across as tougher than DoS Doomsday, smarter, likely a better fighter and he has some funky ranged abilities and that crazy halberd.

Side note: Bendis' 12 page story was the highlight of Action Comics #1000 for me and the only story that had any gravitas. This 6 issue Man of Steel run will certainly be interesting.

How did it go down?

Can Flash actually take a punch from Superman?

If they have never fought in anger would Superman vs. Zoom be a better indicator of how things would go?

Chatting about Invincible in the GD forum got me wondering why (in this decompressed era) we see LESS multiple issue fights in today's comics.

Looking back which are your favourites and why?

Personally I am a big fan of Invincible vs. Conquest (which spanned 3 issues IIRC) which I think does a great job of putting the hero in peril (multiple times) and then saving the hero with a believable 'get out'. Lots of fantastic touches along the way such as Conquest's (Double Page Spread dialogue basically telling Mark thanks for the fight but now he's going to kill him, Eve's 'Death', "Getting angry doesn't make you stronger" etc.)

I also like Superman vs. Doomsday although more for its significance than it being a well-staged fight.

ICT / Spider-man vs. Firelord (ASM 269-270) gets Punchometered

Okay so I got ASM #269 and #270. Really good story, so I thought I would go over the controversial fight with the Punchometer (which I know you are all big fans of) and see if it is controversial at all.

Spider-man (Class 10* ) approx. a 12 on the Punchometer Scale (where Hercules is 100)

Strength/Power 12, Durability 3, Hit Points (to KO) 50, Fast Healing 0.75/page

*Not sure if the Black Suit increases Spidey's power, there is no evidence of that in the story whatsoever so I'll assume its not a factor.

Firelord (Class 50 - according to Marvel); approx. a 25 on the Punchometer Scale.

Strength/Power 25, Durability 6, Hit Points (to KO) 100, Fast Healing 1.5/page

Lets see how this plays out:

Page #1 (of the fight)

Spidey Swing Kicks Firelord - gonna say the swing kicks are a more powerful attack and rate a 16 (the next highest tier) in terms of damage.

So 16 - 6 (Firelord's durability) = 10 damage (90 remaining)

Page #2 - Another swing kick

Firelord heals 1.5 but takes another 10 damage = (81.5 remaining)

Page #3 - Firelord heals 1.5, (83 remaining)

Page #4 - Firelord heals 1.5 (84.5 remaining)

Firelord clumsily (because Spidey stole his staff) flies into a building stunning himself. Gonna say that is akin to Firelord using his own power against himself.

Damage 25 - 6 = 19 damage (65.5 remaining)

We then have 16 pages where either they are not fighting or there are no blows landed. During which Firelord heals 24 damage (89.5 remaining)

Page #21: Spidey tricks Firelord into an oncoming train but he heats up sufficiently to melt through the front of it. Sound effect suggests he might have slightly hurt himself here but its hard to judge. Just going to say it cancels out his healing for that page.

Page #26: Five more pages of healing (97 remaining)

Firelord is caught up in a building being demolished by explosives. Gonna rate this about a '33', its better than a tank shell and that rates a 25.

33 - 6 = 27 (70 remaining)

Page #27: Firelord heals 1.5,

Spidey hits him with a lump of rock (weighing 1-2 tons I'd estimate). Damage 12 - 6 = 6 (65.5 remaining)

Page #29: Firelord heals another 3 (68.5 remaining)

Gas Station explosion, which the art and Spidey himself suggest was bigger than the previous explosion of the demolition site. Going to count this as a '50', so 50 - 6 = 44 damage (24.5 remaining)

Page #30: Firelord Heals 1.5 (26 remaining)

Spidey hits him with 7 definite attacks in quick succession each dealing 6 damage: Total 42 damage.

Note Firelord topples after the first 5 (30 damage) and I'd argue is already KO'ed by that point.

Which is another win for the Punchometer.  ;)

Conclusions

The major problems with determining an exact outcome of this fight are my subjective ratings of the 3 'explosions' (or specifically: Firelord flying into a building, Firelord caught in an exploding/collapsing building and Firelord caught in the Gas Station explosion).

From a storytelling perspective the implication is that each such attack is greater than the last.

Hence I rated them a 25, 33 and 50 respectively. Note that on the Punchometer scale getting hit by a tank shell is about a '25'. We know the latter two explosions are definitely more powerful than a Tank Shell.

Overall I'm reasonably happy with the outcome though not the fight itself.

Its pretty clear its major ass-kissery on Spidey himself. Even assuming he had Superior Skill AND the Spidey Sense the fact that Firelord NEVER lands a hit (in a fight spanning two issues) seems like bullshit. That's sort of softened by the fact we see (and Spidey acknowledges) Firelord is taking it easy on him:

Spidey thought bubble: "Firelord's just playing with me now. He knows he's got me on the run."

But even that sits at odds with some of Firelord's pompous dialgue.

...I guess ultimately we'll just have to put Firelord's miserable showing down to him being a bit of a hothead.

Okay, I must confess I am fishing in the dark on this one and looking for some X-Perts* to solve this mystery for me.

The solution may lie in finding out who/what has destroyed either Omega Red's Tendrils or Doc Ock's Tentacles, but I can't find anything specific online and I am not a major X-men or Spidey fan.

Anyway what says the jury that is Herochat?

I'd be leaning towards Carbonadium > Secondary Adamantium but my reasoning is (very) sketchy.

Okay, picked up some issues of Superman yesterday, lets get into it.

Superman #15

Cover: Didn't do it for me, Superman is alone against an unseen threat that has likely defeated a bunch of other heroes as evidenced by the other objects on the ground. Superman holding the rabbit character so maybe it has some cutesy appeal, but overall its not a great cover from any viewpoint...camera is looking down on Superman inferring he's weaker than the threat (whatever it is).

Incidentally while I was in the comic store I looked at the two shelves side by side of Marvel's releases this week and those from DC and I have to say the Marvel covers are FAR stronger, simply as visual attractions.

Interior Art: Its got four artists and while the styles are similar I don't think this sort of thing helps the comic. It loses something of its own identity by doing this. The colouring is decent though so the whole thing doesn't get dragged down too much but as with Darkseid War its lacking in personality and exaggeration for the most part because there is no style to the art; its artists trying to mimic real life rather than create a comic book.

Jarring Art: Who or what is the Green Lantern leaning against on page #6? It's like he's leaning against an invisible wall.

Splash Pages:
- #6-7 Double Page Spread: Bunch of characters standing 'generically' (whoop-dee-doo), that I will sort of overlook because Aquawoman looks sexy in it (I'm as shallow as the next guy...pun intended) :p
- #10-11 Double Page Spread: Bunch of characters engaged in a (badly staged) fight.
- #19: Reveal of big bad guy Prophecy, not a great splash page, but I don't have a problem with a new villain getting a splash page reveal.
- #20: Superman close-up, terrible splash page, Superman's expression looks one of disinterest when it should have been gritty determination and really this is just a padding page at best.

Design:
- Punisher-Superman looks cool but the rest of the League of Shadows were very weak in terms of design.
- Aquawoman looks hot, I'll give her that - the rest of her 'League' were okay I suppose (Didn't like their Flash design and the alternate Batman's light-blue costume doesn't work and clashes too much with the blue most of the Supermen wear).
- Superdemon's mob I can barely make out (for a first time reader this book would be crap, it does a piss poor job of introducing who is who) I have a vague idea who most of the character's are meant to be (primarily because MOST are just alternate versions of Superman or the Justice League) but maybe they have different names or powers, if so I'd never know any of that from the comic.
- The Gatherer aliens look like generic 'scary' humanoids. Nothing particularly impressive and they are not drawn very clearly in the comic.
- The big villain "Prophecy" is revealed on a splash page on page #19 of 20. I don't know if this is the first time we see him in the comics (?) but it isn't a great splash page, we sort of see him from the side so we don't get a good look at his face, at this point we also don't understand how big he is (he's a giant) and the splash page doesn't make that clear. I kinda like his costume, but his head is pretty generic (its on fire) - he looks like a sloppily designed Dormammu knock-off but without any 'menace'.

Story: I like the story (someone is kidnapping the 'Supermen' within each of the 52 Universes) - its fresh enough to me and suggestive of a badass villain. I just really hate the way they told it though, plus with 63 panels you barely get any 'story'.

Pacing: The pacing is good for two reasons...
- Firstly there are two brief action scenes (both crap but I'll get to that in a bit).
- Secondly this book only has 63 panels. That is the LEAST amount I remember seeing in a comic book that didn't make a specific reason for having a low number (ie. Nextwaves Double Page spread issue or Walt's Thor vs. Midgard Serpent issue of all splash pages). 63 is a very low number of panels and really doesn't give readers much content.

Advertisements: This book has a metric shit-ton of ads for other books and they are jarringly placed where they ruin the flow of the story. I counted 11 ad-pages, plus two more on the inside front and back covers. Its really noticeable and from page #12 onward its virtually comic page - ad - comic page - ad - etc. For goodness sake put all the ads at the back of the book - especially for your own comics DC.

The Action Scenes: Utter shit, lets take a close look.

Action Scene #1: Pages #1-5; Alternate Earth where the League of Shadows (think Punisher versions of the Justice League) are battling some badly drawn, sketchy red, sharp teeth alien enemies. Paneling is all done with jagged lines for some reason...maybe to suggest the chaotic nature of the assault who knows...?

I didn't like this scene for several reasons.

1. The Geography of the action scene is badly established because the heroes and the villains almost NEVER interact within the same panel (it only happens in one panel and even here the 'camera' pulls out so far that the aliens are tiny blips coloured almost identically to the background - for maximum obfuscation). Heroes shoot in various directions and its all a bit of a mess.
2. There is no drama to the scene. They kill off their version of Batman (killed in one blast from an alien - even though they couldn't hit any of the 'heroes' before when their were possibly hundred of aliens and the heroes don't seem to be dodging) and the reaction is nothing.
3. The aliens ARE a threat (to the alternate Batman at least) but we don't know that until the end when they are all dead (the last Alien blasts Batman as it dies). The comic doesn't do a good job establishing the aliens as a threat and doesn't do a good job establishing the heroes as competent and it doesn't do a good job establishing that the heroes are in trouble.
4. Ultimately the scene turns out to be a set-up for a total squash for the unseen BOSS villain who kills all the remaining heroes (except Punisher-Superman) from off-panel with one blast.

Action Scene #2: Pages #10-13; Alternate Earth League (with Superdemon) vs. Various other alternate League characters including 'our' Superman. Starts with a double page spread. Only Superman, Superdemon and Ragman are relevant in the fight though.

Again its terrible:

1. Starts with a clumsy Double Page Spread 'fight' scene (in which NO ONE gets hit). Half the characters we can't properly see and even if we could see them the comic hasn't established who they are or what they can do. This is of course a common tactic of modern comics - rather than create an action scene where characters actually 'DO' stuff, lets just show a large splash of characters about to do stuff and let readers imagine it was a good fight. Of course this means there is no drama because there is no risk/reward because no one is in danger. Aquawoman is leaping in to stab someone with her trident even though the plan here is to simply make the other League 'see sense'.
2. The fight gets a little better on the next page when Ragman & Superdemon team up to wrap up our Superman and set him on fire.
3. The fight/battle ends on the fourth page with 'our' Superman EASILY beating up (and knocking out) Super-demon in ONE PANEL. Totally destroying any tension and utterly killing any credibility for Superdemon.

So lets examine who gets 'hurt' in the action scenes:

1. Alternate Batman killed in ONE attack by a Gatherer.
2. Alternate League (all but Punisher-Superman) killed in ONE attack (from off panel) by Prophecy.
3. Superman seemingly in pain from Superdemon's fire, but we can't see his face so there is no emotion in the scene.
4. Superdemon knocked out in ONE panel by Superman.

By the numbers modern 'fast food format' action scenes. Only a single instance of a character getting hurt and even then we cannot see their face.

Verdict: The issue wasn't great but just about gets a pass because it throws SO many different elements at the reader in the presumption that some of it sticks. The action scenes are a mess but at least it HAS action scenes. The story is interesting but . The designs are a mixed bag and most of the characters are not explained or named. The pacing is fast but the whole comic smacks of decompression with only 63 panels.

A generous 3/10.

+ Story...interesting
+ Pacing...and simply having some action scenes at all

+/- Art (and only not a negative because of Punisher-Superman and Aquawoman).
+/- Design (mixed bag)

- Cover...weak
- Action Scenes...badly done
- Decompression...serious lack of panels
- Adverts...annoying

What did anyone else think about this issue?

ICT / Lowest 'ranked' character that can break light speed

Okay, so pretty straightforward question.

What is the lowest ranked (in terms of overall power) character that can break the light speed barrier.

I'm going to say Green Lantern (Top Tier*) by default.

*in my opinion.

We have seen that Supes, Flash, Gladiator, Thor, Surfer et al can exceed light speed many times. But who have we seen below those characters who can do it?

DC Drones / Darkseid War critical review

Hi all, okay got the Darkseid War trades: Part 1, Part 2 and Power of the Gods. Just fancied a splurge (also got Superman Rebirth trade 1 and Head Lopper volume 1).

Overview: I initially thought (in comic reader mode) "This is pretty cool!" but then the cynic in me started noticing all the problems with it.

1. The Art: Now for the most part the art is technically proficient. But it is TOTALLY lacking in character and individuality. I don't necessarily know the artists in question from other books but looking through the books there was no panel even that I thought was especially noteworthy*. Even the KEY page of the whole book (the DPS of Darkseid being blasted) looks sterile compared to the original Jim Lee sketch of it at the back of the book.

*Actually I take that back, the panel with Green Lantern on the sofa-chair was cool.

I was trying to understand why nothing really stood out for me and at the back of my head I remembered my How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way where Stan the Man's edification specifically tells artists they have to EXAGGERATE poses and angles. These books have none of that, there's no exaggeration and as a result everything looks so flat. The artist(s) need to dial things 'up to eleven' instead of playing it safe.

2. The Colour: As with the art it took me a while to understand why I was having problems with the colour, I mean its okay I guess, but I think it suffers from the flaw common in many modern books. The background colour is as strong as the foreground, so the characters simply don't 'pop' out and thus everything is harder to follow. Pick up any books from 20 years ago or so and the backgrounds were generally muted pale colours to help the characters in the foreground stand out. Clearly modern comics have regressed in this regard.

Added to which a lot of the background colours in this book are very dark as well, strong reds, browns and red-browns which merges all the warm colours.

3. The Art Direction: Disappointing. I think the books averaged between 4-10 splash pages PER ISSUE! Most of these were not memorable moments, in fact I'd estimate most of them were simply characters posing with most of the remainder being two characters in close proximity and that's our fight - whoopee.

The ridiculous thing is that I counted several major deaths in the book that are drawn in tiny panels but yet there must be about 20 full page spreads of characters just posing.

Never has a book got by with so much "BOOM" tube action and (offscreen Motherbox) "PING" sound effects.

Also it has an annoying habit of overlapping panels for no good reason almost every other page.

Also there are two completely wasted pages at the start of the second trade with some (badly drawn) dripping blood.

4. The Action: Its crap. Usually a fight is basically two people standing nearby in a splash page, thats it. The big scrap is between Darkseid & The Anti-Monitor and even its a bit piss. The opening Grail fight with the league (by League I mean Bats, Cyborg, Shazam and Wondy) is o-kay I guess.

Any other action usually falls into 3 categories:

A. Characters dying in one hit because...?
B. Trademark Geoff Johns 'here comes the cavalry' moments...so lets have a double page spread of a bunch of characters who then do virtually next to nothing after this page.
C. Nearby swings and misses or blasts with no connection.

5. The Story: Okay its Decompressed, but beyond that it wasn't bad in its inception. The IDEA of a Darkseid 'War' is cool even if THERE IS NO ACTUAL WAR in the book its more like a Darkseid FIGHT. Also it totally begs the question why didn't the Anti-Monitor simply invade Apokolips with his Shadow Demons. There was no explicit reason why Earth was involved at all other than shoe-horning the Justice League into it. I mean you could maybe argue the Flash was a key plot point but its a stretch.

6. The Heroes Involvement: MINIMAL at best.
- Batman does nothing but exposition dump. He transitions from his typical 'know it all' to 'literal know it all' when he sits on the Mobius Chair.
- Green Lantern is there (because its Geoff johns) so that Batman isn't always talking to himself - plus so Johns can squeeze in a 'Here come the Lanterns' double page spread.
- Superman gets a temporary 'heel turn' (and a crappy negative look) that has zero effect on the story. His entire involvement amounts to a brief tussle with Lex.
- Wonder Woman is in the story but other than the Amazons-related backstory to the villain Grail she has nothing to do. Arguably she's the emotional anchor for the Steve Trevor 'heel turn' near the end but that just ends in an unsatisfactory confusing mess.
- Cyborg is basically a useless plonker although he does have a sub-plot where he downloads his mind into a Lantern Ring.
- Shazam does almost LITERALLY nothing in 10 issues worth of story even though for most of it he's the "God of Gods" with the power of six powerful beings including Yuga Khan.

The big question is this...if we removed one or more of the above members of the Justice League from this story would any of the events change? The answer is a resounding NO. The only heroes that matter in the story (albeit to a small degree) are Flash (very briefly) and Mister Miracle.

- The Flash basically stands still for the majority of the story (no that's not a joke), but does have the cool merge thing with the Black Racer (cool in terms of design that is) and he does kill two characters in the few scenes where he is allowed to do anything.
- Mister Miracle is like an additional Batman with regards information dumping and he does bridge the Apokolips aspect, but other than being necessary for the prison break-in scene he is also totally useless.

7. The Villains Involvement: Better than the heroes, but not by much

A. The Crime Syndicate: Actually far more interesting and involved in the story than the Justice League. Firstly the Crime Syndicate experienced ACTUAL LOSS in the story (their world was destroyed by the Anti-monitor) giving them motivation.
- Owlman: Seems to know more than Batman even though Batman is sitting on the Mobius chair that lets him know everything.
- Superwoman: Has the whole pregnancy/baby Macguffin going on.
- Ultraman: Kryptonite-addict addled angle is played up well, PLUS he has an actual fight (albeit brief) with the Anti-Monitor. Which is more than Superman does in the whole story.
- That Green Lantern Woman: I dunno what to make of it, its a tad confusing, I suspect its part of an ongoing Green Lantern plot that I have not been reading.
- Grid: He's crap, but still does more than Cyborg.

B. Grail: Cool look and backstory. However, she never has anything more than a scuffle with Wonder Woman. But my main problem with Grail is that while she makes a cool Wonder Woman villain, she makes a crap Justice League villain. Luckily the League act like a bunch of twats in the fight.
...she takes out Flash with a deus ex machina (teleports out of his mouth) that seems to incapacitate him.
...she takes Batman out easily; whoopee.
...she takes Cyborg out easily (even though spacially Shazam is closer before that).
...Shazam then blasts her away but keeps his back turned towards her long enough to get stabbed in the back...like an idiot.
...she has a tussle with Wonder Woman where her Omega Beams destroy the bracelets. I don't think either ever lands a punch or blast upon the other.

C. Darkseid: Looks like a fool the whole story and the Parademons are inconsequential as per usual. Hangs with the Anti-Monitor in their clash for a while but sickening that it had to be resolved with a macguffin rather than a fight (although that's symptomatic of basically every comic book fight at the Big 2 in the past decade so hardly a surprise - no one is allowed to beat anyone without 'bullshits').

D. The Anti-Monitor: A bit of character development, I suppose with the backstory thing. Bit annoyed his Shadow Demons were downplayed so much considering how powerful they are in COIE. Again disappointingly defeated by 'bullshits' even though clearly being hurt by Ultraman.

E. Assorted Apokolips Flunkies: Kalibak shows up and simply gets blinded by Grail. Steppenwolf and Kanto (who is verbally built up to be a badass) do nothing, I think Kanto throws a dagger once.  ::)

The Good: I suppose at this juncture the question might be well what the hell did I like about it?
i. The basic idea is cool.
ii. Grail COULD become a cool villainess (for Wonder Woman)
iii. The book actually sets up some interesting future stories: who dusted Owlman & Metron at the end? There are three Jokers!!!?
iv. That's about it, the best thing I can say about it is that its just about okay.
v. Actually I got the trades for £10 each so that wasn't too harsh a price.

Conclusion: The plot itself is serviceable but padded (decompressed) and the heroes are almost inconsequential to the story. The action is very weak and lacks punch (both literally and figuratively). The sterile art lacks character and the colouring simply obfuscates the foreground.

Score: 3/10 (which is weird because I was thinking 'this is cool' when first reading it, but it totally falls apart under scrutiny).

Last Question: Does no one ever think to pull those tubes out of the Anti-Monitor's nose?

DC Drones / Whats the verdict on Multiversity?

been thinking about buying the Multiversity Hardcover and just wondering what the board consensus is on it?

I'll probably check a few online reviews as well - but its always nice to get a second or third opinion.

I'm still on the fence about Morrison. I loved All-Star Superman but wasn't that fussed about Final Crisis.

For arguments sake lets say 1 megaton.

My initial thinking is:

- Thing 'tier' characters still die
- Top Tier (ie. Wonderman) could survive
- Elite Top Tier (Thor, Hulk etc.) do survive...since we have multiple examples of this

I suppose the follow-up question is are there any feats to back the above supposition up?

Okay so I decided to check out some Valiant comics (specifically trades) to see if I could find something I liked...now that I no longer give Marvel any of my hard earned 'dollars' I have some extra cash on hip.

I'm generally into top tier superhero action (Thor, Supes, Hulk etc.) but it wasn't exactly clear from the blurb on Valiant's website who the powerful heroes were and weren't. In fact I didn't really like their website at all. I knew they were no longer making Solarr (presumably the closest thing to Superman they had) because of licensing issues.

I decided to stump up for the Valiant: a self-aggrandizingly named team consisting of most of the main heroes (so I could gauge which I liked) and I also bought Divinity 1 & 2 since they went on about the newest uber threat/hero...and the reviews on amazon said it was good*.

*Spoiler...It isn't

The three books all contained 4 issues worth of content so they were a bit flimsier than the usual trade (although Valiant comics seem to have more pages than typical Marvel/DC comics), but in fairness they were relatively inexpensive, so swings and roundabouts.

The Valiant

...The Eternal Warrior keeps failing throughout history to protect the life of the Christ-like figure Geomancer from Death the Immortal Enemy. Now the Immortal Enemy has returned but in this modern age of superheroes do they now have the firepower to stop the unstoppable...?

Good stuff (story): Easily the best of the bunch. An exciting tale that, once it gets going (after some backstory) keeps up a good pace. The characterization was interesting enough even though I had no prior familiarity with them. The resolution was good.

Good stuff (art): The artwork is lovely, some nice imaginative touches like fairytale panels and these nightmare segments and the villain was kinda cool.

Bad stuff (story): The villain falls into the category of one of those threats the heroes can't seriously hurt, but SO MUCH of the book involves heroes fighting the villain. Now don't get me wrong I like action in my comics and for the most part its cool action, but ultimately it feels a tad redundant.

Bad stuff (art): Nitpicking (since the art was generally good), there were too many splash pages that were simply characters posing rather than important parts of the story. Also the colouring seemed overly dark in tone.

Overall: 7/10

Divinity

...In a nutshell "What if the Fantastic Four were only three and Russian Cosmonauts instead of Americans"...oh and they all gain the power of Molecule 'Men' after contact with something 'cosmic'. This book deals with the return of the first of the cosmonauts.

Good stuff (story): It adds a few choice moral dilemmas into the mix.

Good stuff (art): The artwork is very nice and has a more varied colour tone than the Valiant trade reviewed above which seemed very dark.

Bad stuff (story): Holy smokes, its quagmire pacing with the first half of the book being pure backstory, set-up and exposition dumping. Then when the other heroes finally show up to duke it out with Divinity himself we get to realise (as with the Villain in the Valiant) that he's one of those threats the heroes can't actually hurt; except here the action is totally lacklustre. Totally lacks drama since no one is seemingly under threat.

Bad stuff (art): No real complaints, a few too many big posing panels but with a totally new character I can overlook that.

Overall: 3/10; The media blurb on the cover says "The best new superhero of 2015" but I didn't think it was good, nor would I necessarily describe it as a superhero book - its more like the media quote on the back that says "High Concept Sci-fi." Its occasionally interesting but rarely exciting.

Divinity II

...The second cosmonaut of the 'Fantastic Three' returns to Earth, but she's a hardline old-skool commie (whereas the first guy was a marxist hippie).

Good stuff (story): Slightly better paced than the first Divinity book.

Good stuff (art): The artwork is good.

Bad stuff (story): Okay so we've had a fight with a villain who couldn't be defeated/injured (in the Valiant); a fight with a hero who can't be defeated/injured (in Divinity) and now we have a fight between a hero AND a villain, neither of whom can be defeated/injured. Once we realise that, any drama evaporates

Needless to say Valiant seem to love a good "lets Deus Ex Machina our way out of this".

Bad stuff (art): Maybe could have made more of the reality warping/time travelling battle but it was okay I guess.

Overall: 5/10, If you believe actions should have consequences then this ain't the book for you.

Conclusions

One good book, one bad and one in the middle, although none were what I'd call classic superhero fare...however, maybe that's what Valiant are going for?

I'll likely check out another Valiant title (possibly X-O Manowar).

Anyone read these or other Valiant titles and care to chip in/comment?

ICT / Who is the definitive 3 to 5 Ton (strong) character in Comics?

I have been looking over a few lists trying to fill a strength table with examples and I am struggling to find an iconic character in the 3-5 ton category. ie. Someone who is above Wolverine but below Spider-man.

So I thought I would bring this to the collective experts here.

Who should that be? Warlock? Doctor Doom? Gamora? Dracula!?

I was mainly thinking about Marvel, but would happily accept a (more) iconic DC character instead.

Just saw a new thing called the Mars Protein bar.

Anyone here tried it yet?

My past experience with Protein bars is that they generally taste like shit. I might be tempted if this one actually tasted like a Mars bar as the nutritional stats seem half decent.

Bloody things are expensive unless you are buying in bulk. Haven't seen them in any shop yet though (only online).

I'm going on holiday tomorrow but was thinking I might pick up one (or both of these) while I am away to read on the train/plane journey home.

Whats the board consensus or individual opinions on both of these books.

I pretty much know the overall stories of both but I haven't read much (if anything) of the individual issues.

Edit: Are there any other recent DC trades you would suggest instead?
