Title: Weird Random Trivia Thread
Post by: AP on July 15, 2015, 09:19:08 PM
I love random trivia, so let's see what sort of randomness we can come up with.

Ric Flair was not only an orphan, but he was likely bought in a sort of black market baby scheme.  There was this crazy lady in the 50's who had an orphanage that "bought" babies from poor, uneducated folks and immigrants, usually via a good deal of manipulation and having at least one sheriff in her pocket.  She was eventually arrested but not before baby Ric Flair was sold to some random folks.

All of our current technology previously existed in a more advanced form 5000 years ago in Wakanda, before they all ascended to a higher plane and left us cave beasts to play catch-up.

An enormous number of the tropes we seen in Shonen Anime are derived almost entirely from pro wrestling- one of the earliest "Shonen Mangas" as we would recognize them today was MUSCLE, which was wrestling-based. The whole "Guy learns new move/opponent has to learn a new move to COUNTER it" thing is classic Japanese Pro Wrestling, as is the never-ending "Quest To Get Stronger".

The Transformers are largely derived from a handful of separate Japanese toy lines. That's why the Dinobots have actual seats for "pilots" (they're meant to be Giant Flying Mechs), and several Decepticons resemble actual items and are built differently than the others (Soundwave, Megatron and the camera guy).

DAMN, his adopted parents won the orphan lottery big time.

Paul Dini basically married his favorite super hero. Stage magician Misty Lee was informed by a friend that there was a superhero named Zatanna who looked exactly like her. After getting a few Dini written issues she went to a signing at a con to get them autographed by him. They hit it off and he got to marry the closest equivalent to his favorite hero.

There's a species of worm who's gender is determined where their seed lands.

If it lands anywhere: female
if it lands on a female: male, but then they're shrunk down to testes for the female to supply it with sperm for the rest of its life

funfact:
the testes thing also applies to angler fish

PS - Joan Crawford also got her kids from the same orphanage.  One of those kids would go on to write Mommy Dearest as a way to show the world how fucking insane and abusive Joan Crawford was.  The movie version won several razzies.

Some Animal Fun Facts are always awesome:

* The smallest member of the order Carnivora is the Least Weasel. Despite being smaller than your hand, it can kill prey as large as jackrabbits.

* The largest member of the Order is the Elephant Seal- it weighs over 6,000 lbs.

* Hyenas kill prey by disemboweling them, and eat them alive. This is actually considered more "kind" that strangling them to death, like lions do. Lions actually take more Hyena kills than vice-versa. Hyena clits are absolutely enormous (scientists initially thought the species was hermaphroditic), and females are noticeably bigger than males, and bully them mercilessly. They give birth through their super-clits, which tear open in order to do so.

* The largest marsupials in history are the Diprotodons- Wombats the size of Hippos. The males of the Platypus species pack a venomous spur that will cause a human being incurable pain for months on end, and can kill small dogs.

* Despite being stereotyped as goofy pranksters, Chimps are ENORMOUSLY-strong- males are far stronger than any human being, and can easily dismember someone.

* Orcas have figured out how Wave Physics work- They swim in unique formations that allow them to create the largest possible waves, and use the waves to break down small ice floes, allowing them to eat penguins and seals. Other Orcas will actively beach themselves to get at seals on the shoreline.

* Narwhal horns (which typically only grow on males- some males have TWO, and sometimes females get some) are actually tusks, and were sold as "Unicorn Horns" by charlatans in medieval times.

* Despite popular storytelling, a Thresher Shark has never been known to decapitate a human being with its tail. Similarly, an Electric Eel (which isn't an eel at all- it's a Knifefish) has never electrocuted a human being to death. But it could.

* Dimetrodon is more-closely related to modern-day mammals than it is to Dinosaurs. Similarly, Pterosaurs and Aquatic Reptiles are not actual Dinosaurs, either. The aquatic Opthalmosaurus had the largest eyes of any known vertebrate.

* Iguanadon and Megalosaurus, the earliest two dinosaurs discovered in fossils, were initially thought to be quadrupedal, as that was the only way any scientists understood reptiles could walk.

* Titanoboa, the largest snake ever found, looks like this: (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/Jabroniville/Animal%20Builds/titanoboa-getty.jpg)

More whale facts:

People lose their shit about the 60 foot Megalodon, but always seem to forget the largest cetacean currently living: the 60 foot sperm whale, which subsists primarily on giant/colossal squids

Sperm whale never gets no love.

To add to the Killer Whale facts, they're also adaptive learners that understand group tactics, stealth and learn instantly after observing another Orca perform a particular action.

They've also used waves to literally wash seals off iceflows too large to break or tip over.

Duck sex facts:

- ducks mate via gang rape, many males forcing themselves on one female
- male ducks have long corkscrew like penises
- the female can "choose" if a male will inseminate her or not. The inside of her vagina is filled with twists and turns and some are "dead ends." The female can direct the duck dicks accordingly.

In the early 1990s, there was a rumor that the Ultimate Warrior had died of a heart attack explaining why he was off TV for several months. He was supposedly replaced with his twin brother. You could tell the difference due to that one part of the human body that can never be changed or altered in any way: the hair.

In truth, Warrior had been embroiled in a battle with Vince McMahon over receiving more money. He even held up the main event for the 1991 Summerslam (he and Hulk Hogan vs the Triangle of Terror) for more money. Vince acquiesced but the Warrior was sent home after the event and didn't appear on television again until March/April of 1992.

This was the start of his bad blood with the WWF, which lasted for several years, with both sides publicly sniping at the other.

In 2014 however, the Warrior and WWE (WWF's new name) mended ways and the Warrior was inducted into the Hall of Fame and appeared on WWE television for the first time in nearly twenty years.

The next day he died....of a heart attack.

Not to sound arrogant (too late) I thought this was common knowledge?

ANYWHO
there's a fungal form that lives solely in ants, it attracts them, ants eat them, fungus infects their fucking brain.
Ants become ant zombies, and towards the end of their lives (both the fungus and the ant) it makes the ant climb up to the highest spot it can in order to spread spores

This was also the inspiration for Las Plagas in Resident Evil 4, and I'm guessing as well The Last of Us, haven't played the Last of Us to see if they confirm it in game but in Resident Evil 4 one of Carlos' diaries makes a simile to this phenomenon.

and this one is more for fun:

Every fourth generation of monarch butterflies lives three times as long as all the others. The monarchs migrate south over the course of three generations. Then the fourth lives three times as long and migrates back north. I may have the north south parts mixed up, but the generational lifespan difference is accurate. Strange, right?

The old 80's show Night Court had (and might still have) the Guinness World Record for the tallest sitcom cast.  All the men were over six feet tall, then there was Richard Moll who was like 6'8.  Most of the female cast were tall for women (the lady who played Roz was 5'11).

There is a soccer ball floating in Earth's orbit.  The ball was originally on The Challenger.  When it exploded, it was one of the few things that were intact.  An astronaut took it up into space not too long ago as an homage and let it float into orbit.

Domestic cats instinctively don't want to drink the water bowl next to their food, and therefore seek it out first elsewhere in the house, because in the wild any water next to heir kill might be contaminated.

Psychologists and Urologists who study the urinary tract claim that hearing the noise of running water really does make you feel like you need to pee, because the power of suggestion is present.
Running water sounds a lot like urinating, and due to the fact that we literally spend a lifetime performing the same bathroom routine —
using the toilet and hearing it flush, washing our hands under the faucet, taking showers and baths —
we have come to associate many of those bathroom sounds with the act of peeing.
In short, its a Pavlovian reaction.

All of our current technology previously existed in a more advanced form 5000 years ago in Wakanda, before they all ascended to a higher plane and left us cave beasts to play catch-up.

It's not trivia if everyone already knows it FOR A FACT

Because it's never mentioned. The hate Mohawk has for Gizmo doesn't seem too unusual seeing how all the mogwai spawns hate him from the start.

If its widely known, it never got to me, so i thought it was pretty interesting.
Like Oats said above, the two characters are functionally the same, i just never got reincarnation from it.

Yeah no shit. Them being functionally the same isn't what I said, though. The bit of trivia is that they are actually the same according to the director.

A group of engineering students from Purdue University reported that its licking machine, modeled after a human tongue, took an average of 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. Twenty of the group's volunteers assumed the licking challenge-unassisted by machinery-and averaged 252 licks each to the center.

Hundreds of years ago, hurricanes were named after saints, according to NOAA. The hurricane that struck Puerto Rico in 1825 was named Santa Ana, for example.

By the end of the 19th century, an Australian forecaster named Clement Wragge pioneered the practice of naming storms after the Greek alphabet. He then began applying women's names to tropical storms before the end of the 19th century.

NOAA said a group of American soldiers in 1944 named a series of tropical storms in Saipan after their wives.

year later, according to NOAA, the armed services adopted the practice of naming typhoons in the western Pacific after women.

By 1953, the military scrapped its storm-naming method, which worked off a phonetic alphabet, and started attributing female names to storms, according to NOAA.

Male names have only been included on the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) storm lists since 1979.

meteorologists alternate male and female names for storms and rotate them out by using six lists that run through the year 2022.

The lists are reused unless one [storm name] is retired and is substituted with a new name that is selected by the World Meteorological Organization.
