Title: Lost and Found - forgotten movies, books, TV shows, etc.
Post by: AP on October 15, 2014, 03:38:35 AM
Since we have the new boards, I thought I'd dust off this thread.  Whoever is the mod these days may want to sticky this.  Here, we talk about movies and stuff that we've forgotten or only caught a glimpse of, in hopes of finding them.

So I never actually saw thwe movie I'm thiking of but I remember seeing the box cover as a kid.  It had the painting ''The Nightmare'' on it, or possibly a photo representation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Nightmare (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Nightmare).  Really creeped me out as a kid.

I remember the back of the box had black and white stills, so it could have been a B&W flick or possibly had colorless pictures on the back for some reason.  I just remember seeing a goblin-like guy. looking back, he might've looked similar to Orlock from Nosferatu (but it wasn't Nosferatu).  The movie would have to be made in the early-mid eighties at the latest, but could have been made much earlier.

Give answers if you think you know what this could have been or try to find some stuff of your own.

I can't say I know what your thing was.

I have wondered, and this is the type of question HJ would know the answer to, is about this movie I saw long, long ago as a wee child.

There was a group of people trying to accomplish some mission.  Mid evil style shit.  One guy had a weapon like Blade's chakram, that not only was bladed, but it either shot fire or blocked fire.  I forget.  They were also traveling with an old man or something that turned bad and like had black eyes or some shit, I don't remember.

Typing random shit into google, I think the movie might have been 1983's "Krull"

Also, who remembers Little Nemo: The Dream Master?

I was thinking about Krull from your description.

And yes, I remember Nemo.

Fondly remember:

- Lost Cities of Gold is one I think I'm accurately remembering the name of and remember fondly. It had a big flying bird shaped plane, and three kids running around in some place south of the equator.

Then there were some that terrified me, I might not want to remember these, but here they are, both are claymation:

- One focuses on Mark Twain, and these kids, again all claymation. The Devil is there and he creates life and destroys it viciously. And they showed this shit to children!

- The other is about these aliens maybe? I don't even know. They look kind of like clowns. They go to a kids house and I think there were only two of them. Claymation again. The stuff of nightmares.

The clown one sounds like Killer Klowns from Outer Space, but it wasn't claymation.

My movie might be Gothic by Ken Russel.  Looking into it.

Yeah, I know that one well. The one I'm thinking of may not even be clowns per say, but they had something of a clown quality to them, and they talked, and there were not an army of them but only two. Also, they may or may not have been aliens. It's not a lot to go on. The biggest clue is it is claymation and is 20+ years old.

I remember the Mark Twain one. was called the Adventures of Mark Twain. Really highlighted what a great writer the guy was

The clown one seems familar but I can't place it.

The one where people shrink down sounds like it may be one of the Dot movies, but after thinking about the eyepatched dude I think that may be the Fantastic Voyage animated series

There was this other movie I remember but not the name, of course.

It involved a guy who found the body of an old man in a freezer.  The long, close to the ground style freezers.  It was in the basement of his house or something.  Anyway, he found that he could communicate with the frozen guy by recording him with a recorder or some shit.  I also think at some  point people from like, another dimension, killed the man by using (fuck I don't know what its called, its basically an arrow that moves back and forth, sort of a rhythmic hypnotizing device for sleep) to impale him with.  Oh, and at some point the man was obsessively recording and spending time with the frozen guy in the basement, so she shot the frozen guy a bunch of times to shut him up.

Marine Boy?

Man From Atlantis with Patrick Duffy?
Still can't work out how he talked underwater considering it was late 70's special effects...?

Right so I think this is a movie

I think it stars Bill Murray

and I think at one point he fixes someone a drink

and he pours them a gin and tonic

but he goes
"Giiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin.

*tonic*." (Like just a splash of tonic as opposed to the whole bottle of gin he poured in)

I swear it's from a film somewhere but it's managed to develop into my family associating it with me and I don't even drink gin and tonic

Some thing I remember from school, these kids were visiting a museum and somehow ended up back in time in the dinosaur ages. The dinosaurs were intelligent and could talk. From what I remember, it ended on a cliffhanger, with a T. rex saying he could show them a way back to their home, and they had to decide whether he was being truthful or setting them up so he could eat them.

Also, does anyone remember Microzine games?

This falls more under the "etc." part of the thread title, but:

I used to have this magazine-sized anthology type Marvel book. It had a lot of non-superhero stories in it (maybe all non-super stories), but the only one I remember was one about a retired gunslinger masquerading as a bartender in an old western town. Bad guys come to town and start killing everybody, and he has to take up arms again to stop them. I think there was a gunfight on top of a train. The art was excellent, and I think the gunfighter was drawn vaguely Mexicanish, maybe.

The story was definitely black & white, and the whole magazine might have been b&w but I can't remember. If any of you guys could help me track down the specific magazine or even just provide me with a listing or source for magazine sized Marvel anthology books, I'd legit appreciate it.

That's the rub. Could have been anywhere from the 60's to the 80's. from what I remember of the art, I'd probably shoot for the early 80's.

Anyone know the name of possibly a short-lived tv series, maybe 5 years ago...where America was invaded & made to rule under a monarchy?

I only caught half an episode so yeah I'm pretty vague on the details but it was pretty gritty & came off like a political war drama.

Do any of you guys remember a cartoon from forever ago where a crow gets super depressed, drinks moonshine from one of those awesome XXX jugs they used to have, and then pulls out a giant revolver and shoots himself in the head? I think it had a similar format to those old Warner Brothers shorts, but I'm not sure if it was one of them or not. If I had to guess, the original time frame would have been like late 50's , maybe 60's. I remember watching it as a kid in the early 80's, when they used to show all those old cartoon shorts on tv

So another film I search for, but have no clue where to start.

It was midevil.  I think it starts with some people digging up the bones of an old king or something, and flogging the bones as some kind of punishment.

Toward the end, there is a witch type character (minor character) who is about to be burned at the stake, so she eats gunpowder so that she dies faster (and explodes in the process)

Also at the end, I believe the bad guy (who had the old king's bones whipped) is thrown into a pit with the bones of the old king, who's bones get up and go after him or something.

Any ideas?

There was a movie trailer maybe early/mid last year.

Zombie/virus themed...young girl who was either imprisoned or grew up in a military science lab who possibly possessed the cure or could control the "zombies".
The older she got the more dangerous she became...

I'm keen to read the novel it's based on.

Anyone know the title or release date?

This is one from the wife, but it sounds familiar:

It was a cartoon series that's similar to Smurfs about a village of little magical creatures and some woman is trying to capture them to gain eternal youth.  The theme song had the words "We will stay young forever".  Some kids might've been on the show and played with the creatures.  It might be a Canadian show.

French Canadian. Has something about eternal youth in the plot synopsis.

okay, I got one.

It was a storybook from the late 80s/early 90s and it was a total Transformers rip off with giant robots fighting at a dam. The cover featured a big red human-like robot. I don't remember much beyond that but one of the robots was called "Twin" i think. And at the end, the good robots were presented medals by the "president of earth"

Looking for the name/any info on, a fantasy MA movie where a guy goes on a quest and yadda yadda, he ends up looking at a book w. mirrors for pages.
Guess the answer was himself?
I remember liking it, but never saw it as an adult.

I guess Kung Fu Panda took inspiration from that movie.  I suggest googling all the easter eggs from that one.

I remember seeing this movie approx 9 years ago. I believe it was a direct to TV movie. I thought at first it was something related to X-men but it was not.
The opening has two young men fighting some mooks and stomping them, let's call them E and S. Then as they begin to leave, one of mooks get up and try to hit one in the back with a metal pipe only to be dropped by the E's electrical powers

They had this secret training center for those with powers. Their leader was this guy with grey hair but looked young otherwise. I think he looked like the one who played The Atom in LOT.

Then there was this guy who sneanks into this house to kidnap a boy with heat control powers, and in the boy's futile attempt to escape he accidentally burns a hole in the guy's hand, and guy takes him to some place and puts him in cage. I think that might have been a dog kennel
So the heroes investigate, questioning the parents. That's when the Jean Grey stand in girl (who IIRC looked a bit like Alexandra Daddario) looked into the mom's mind and couldn't scene much but image of her reaching out to her son with a totally white background. The leader later theorized that she was a telepath and had a telepathic connection to her son.
Later they find out where the boy is being held and the two guys from the opening go tobsave him, and it's revealed that S can temporarily access Super Strength, which is marked by his blood vessels becoming orange and visible

Then E takes out a tracker/power nullifier on the boy's neck with his powers and they leave. On the way, a woman takes S hostage and demands the boy,non which E starts forming an electrical ball in his hand ala The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Then the boy imitatesbhis movements and forms a ball of heat energy in his hand, which he fires at the woman's gun, which she drops since it became too hot and burned her hand and they ko her. It's revealed that the kidnapping was orchestrated by the boy's dad in an attempt to remove his powers but something went Wrong.

The guy's take the boy to their centre before sending him home, making the boy happy. The movie ends with the leader guy overlooking a room where something is being built, from a overhead room separated by glass

I had one. it was a sitcom that aired on the Disney Channel in the late 80s. short lived, might have also been on another network they had a deal with.

Anyways, there was a married couple and they moved to Arizona and found a pair of kids squatting in their new home, an older boy like 10ish and a younger girl about 5-6.

they pretended the kids were theirs in order to get a good impression with the guy's new boss.

I remember one exchange in particular. The Dad was cooking breakfast and put on a Zorro mask and asked everyone to guess who he was

little girl: Batman!

mom: the Lone Ranger!

boy: Racoon Boy!

80's movie (maybe very early 90's):

A group of college students run an experiment to go into the mind of people in comas, or maybe they go into peoples' dreams.  Either way, they go into the minds of others using some new tech.  Like in the Matrix, Inception, The Cell, etc. people start dying in the dream world which means they die in the real world.  At the end of the movie, it turns out the main girl was comatose or something and the entire thing had been in her mind and the college class was studying her dreams.

Everyone's familiar with 2005's LA thriller, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang...Shane Black...RDJ & Val Kilmer.

But has anyone seen or remembers (2001) Kiss Kiss (Bang Bang) starring Stellan Skarsgard, Paul Bettany & Chris Penn?

Felix (Skarsgard) wants to retire as a hitman but the Fraternity won't let him & puts a contract on his head.
At the same time, Felix is burdened with looking after "slow witted" Chris Penn's character.

A very underrated British comedy/action.

I'm going to try this again because if I don't figure it out it's going to haunt me til the day I die.

A b&w Marvel anthology magazine sized book, probably from the mid 70s to mid 80s. Not Marvel Preview or Epic Illustrated. The specific one I'm looking for had a story where an old west town was being attacked by outlaws, and the saloon bartender was an old man who was a retired gunfighter who was tired of all the death of his past life but came out of retirement to protect the town and died in the attempt. There was a fight on top of a train. I can't remember any of the other stories in the magazine, but I'm fairly confident that there were no superhero stories.

If anybody could give me a list of b&w Marvel and Marvel imprint magazines at least, that might help. Google has not been my friend

The main plot of .hack/Sign was the fact that the main character (Tsukasa) couldn't log out, and the character had no anthropomorphic characteristics.

I got one. I just saw the end of it once many many years ago. I thought it might have been Sundown: The Vampire In Retreat but it wasn't.

It was on the USA network, and there was a guy and a girl in an underground tunnel being attacked by a vampire. They were saved by another guy (who may have been a vampire himself) staking the first vampire through the back, the point of the stake coming out of his chest.

They say their goodbyes and the man and woman climb up out of a manhole in what looks to be an abandoned desert town. The guy cuts his finger as they do and the girl sucks it to stop the bleeding, maybe hinting that she's turning into a vampire.

This is probably almost 30 years ago when I saw this so I'd venture to say it was an 80s movie.

there was a site years ago that did a twisted toyfare theater type thing with hero action figures. all I remember is a storyline they called House of S, a Bishop action figure being used as every black hero, and Cosmic Spidey flying into space to fight Thanos with him waxing on about "Oh Nietzsche, where would I be without you?"

A vague movie bugging me...

A rich, mysterious recluse lives in a like modern-day castle in the middle of NY.
There's either a very inquisitive kid or a thief who tries & break in either out of curiosity or wanting to steal a fabled piece. They're the main character of the movie.

There's possibly a fantasy, super natural element but it's more in the imagination of the main character.

The castle was either a shiny obsidian black or like it was literally made out of gold.

I keep getting images of The Fisher King but that doesn't feel right either...

That’s Jennifer Garner from the series she starred in “Alias”.  It was a pretty decent spy show with a lot of action created by J.J. Abrams which did tend to have her in swimwear and similar things.
There she was posing as a high end prostitute.  Earlier in the scene she was wearing the same outfit in red.  I definitely prefer the black.

Trying to remember a movie that had Chris Cornell's "The Keeper (Of The Flame)" as part of its soundtrack.

Any idea?

That’s Jennifer Garner from the series she starred in “Alias”.  It was a pretty decent spy show with a lot of action created by J.J. Abrams which did tend to have her in swimwear and similar things.
There she was posing as a high end prostitute.  Earlier in the scene she was wearing the same outfit in red.  I definitely prefer the black.
Never watched the show, so it was a complete surprise to see her like that. But now, now i know!
Thanks a bunch...-thumbs up-

Okay lets see...movie starts off w. kids writing their names in wet cement. One kid’s partway done and gets abducted i think?
Kids all come back together as adults, and the names are still there in the street many years later.

In one of Chapelle’s shows he talks about a notorious pimp.
Anyone remember the title of the book or author?

Keen to read it.

Iceberg Slim; “Pimp: The Story of My Life”

It was from one of his recent stand-up specials.

Now for a movie title...

A "werewolf" movie set in France circa 1800's...but turns out the beast is actually a tortured lion (possibly encased in armour) trained to kill & incite fear...

It's a bit like Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter: obviously made up but the people who wrote it did their homework to a surprising degree.  For instance, the wolf being a lion is/was a legit theory as a lion had escaped from captivity around that time and place.

The Sixth Sense.

Haven't seen it in years & I vaguely remember the ending...

At what point in the movie did Hayley's character realise Willis was dead?

When Willis comes across his own dead body on the bed, was this before or after he met Halyey?
Ie: Did Willis himself know he was a ghost prior to meeting Hayley?

No, he didn't know he was a ghost until the end of the movie. I don't think Cole knew he was a ghost either.

That's not really the function of this thread, though.

Dude, I wasn't gonna make a separate thread juz to ask 2 questions about 1 movie.

Plus the "forgotten & etc" in the title kinda makes this the most apt thread to post in...

Actually I'd really like to see a fixed thread on Movie Trivia, to share & ask...that'd be cool.

This isn't a thread about forgetting certain aspects of media.  It's about media that's been forgotten entirely.

And you are free to make a movie trivia thread.

How exactly are you going to determine "media that's been forgotten entirely" by everyone in order to post here?

You have set a precedent before this of not knowing what this thread is for. It's honestly pretty easy.

Bran: "Hey I watched this movie in the late 90s where some kid saw dead people and I think Bruce Willis was in it. What was the name that movie?".
^This goes here.

Bran: "Hey I don't understand the Sixth Sense".
^Does not go here

Yeah, I forgot about the last time.  Bran just has a hard time grasping the concept of this thread for some reason.
