Title: Kaiju movies that are actually scary
Post by: AP on April 16, 2018, 08:53:14 AM
Kaiju movies were initially meant to be a horror sub-genre even though a lot of them tend to lean toward sci-fi/action and were geared toward kids for a while.  There are a lot of kaiju fans here, so I'm curious to know if there are any kaiju movies that actually gave some legitimate scares.

I thought Cloverfield offered a nice sense of dread, although most of its scares were jump scares.  And while it's not a typical kaiju movie, the giant troll at the end of Troll Hunter was pretty damn creepy.  The initial attack in The Host was pretty brutal too, as you feel yourself in almost as much shock as the characters.

Do we count The Myst as a Kaiju movie?

The thing I found funny about Kaiju movies is that they are probably the least scary genre of horror flicks but in a real world scenario Godzilla would be a lot scarier than Jason.

About as much as Troll Hunter, so why not.

True.  Most people would be frightened into a coma if they saw a giant monster knocking down buildings and shrugging off military ballistics.  The concept is far more terrifying than a zombie with a machete.  I think a lot of it has to do with special effects.  Most kaiju movies involve guys in rubber suits knocking down paper machete models of skyscrapers.

Special effects are certainly a key factor but even so The most recent American Godzilla and King Kong looked amazing and both still both were more exciting than scary.

That goes back to kaiju movies often being sci-fi/action as opposed to horror films.  It helps that both Godzilla and Kong had somewhat heroic depictions in those flicks.

Shin-Godzilla looked much more terrifying than 2014 Goji, but i think the way the Kaiju have been presented makes it more sci-fi than horror. In Shin Goji you see him topple buildings with families still in them.if they went full R-rating,i think it would be a lot scarier, showing real death & destruction up close.

Yeah if we count the Mist, then that one was pretty creepy.

Kaiju are like natural disasters w. faces. Scary af in a nature doesnt give a shit way, not actually creepy overall.

I was always creeped out by Gaira in War of the Gargantuas when I was a kid

^^^those were the different colored bigfoot things, right?

Its weird what can creep you out, though. As a kid i was freaked by Guy Smiley on Sesame Street, and he was basically the most human looking muppet.

That's right, re: the Gargantuas.

My picks, I'd say Cloverfield, the original King Kong and Godzilla, and Godzilla vs. Hedorah.

(Also, as a kid, I was traumatized by a scene in King Kong Lives where a guy gets ripped in half)

yeah, though in the Japanese version you find out they're made from Frankenstein's cells.

But yeah, that scene where this little fishing boat stops and the old man looks overboard and sees Gaira looking up out of the water at him creeped 6 year old HJ out. I even had a nightmare about him

Seriously I'm just over anything with tentacles.

It always feels like a cheap cop-out because of budget restraints OR when you finally see the full creature, the tentacles just don't suit the design.

I wasn't personally scared by anything in Godzilla vs the Smog Monster ( tho the nightclub scene was freaky as fuck )...but I can see how some kids might've felt a chill watching Hedorah poisoning and melting people.

Yeah a fav movie...always thought Treat Williams was a cool actor.

But yeah this movie came in mind when I thought about tentacles not matching the creature...

Attack on Titan is at least really fucking creepy when the Titans attack. Anime version. Didn't watch the live action.

Thats very true

This one didn't get me due to being an adult, but when I saw the 05 King Kong at the movies there were SEVERAL kids freaking out and or crying during the pit sequence. Especially when that slug thing swallows Andy Serkis

thinking back to my childhood....in Son of Godzilla the monster Spiga/Kumonga kinda freaked me out. Not in general, but like certain shots like when Godzilla's knocked him out and the spider's lying there, opening and closing its jaws before shooting its stinger into Godzilla's eye or like when it stuck one of its legs into the cave to grab at the humans there.

I got anxious watching it. I couldn't remember how they got away and thought I would have to track down the next clip.

I love the concept and the idea of AoT as a one and done

But then people really liked it so they kept doing it

Giant, smiling humanoids that eat people and just like to cause destruction is some great shit, but now we're getting explanations and other horseshit that it doesn't need

I wouldn't say it was scary per se, but the scene in the first Pacific Rim where the girl flashes back to the kaiju that destroyed Seoul (?) had a nice sense of bombed-out terror that I wish the last Godzilla would have picked up on.

I'm not sure if Jackson meant for that entire scene to be a highlight of the movie but it sure left an impression.

The minimal dialogue between the characters & soundtrack of impending doom was just simply well done.

I think it comes down to a "realism" thing. We KNOW that giant monsters are utterly fantastical to the point of being silly. Man-sized creatures are a lot easier to "believe", even though they're just as fictional. So a Zombie feels like it breaks reality less than a 100-story radioactive dinosaur.

True.  It's a bit hard to fathom.

Watch The Host.

It's a Korean kaiju flick in modern times, the movie is from 2006 or 08. It's a very small kaiju but it's actually REALLY well done and fairly damn creepy. Clips are on Youtube.

The Host was good but I always wondered why they didn't go with the original pretext...?

From memory the host was supposed to be a parasite living off the creature turning it from placid to evil.
