Title: Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Post by: Mightily Oats on December 03, 2017, 06:39:42 PM
I think the only JRPG I've ever played in my life was Chrono Trigger on the DS, so maybe I'm one of the few that isn't burnt out on the genre, but nearly 6 hours in now and I am really digging this game

Anyone else get it?

You need to play more JRPGs, sweetie

I’m planning on picking it up sometime this week. This will be my first JRPG as well but it seems like some of the classic RPGs of my youth.

Having a great time so far. Picked up the special edition, definitely worth it.

Dont waste your time using Blades that are shit.

If it sucks, dont put WP into it.

Use Rare cores, and put those courage/justice whatever orbs into it.

The orbs you use decide the rarity (somewhat) as well as the possible elements it will be.

They have already had tit fondling in cutscenes and mentions of the one eyed monster.

But honestly how’s the gameplay? I’ve got 4 or 5 games for my switch and this is the only thing I foresee coming out soon that seems remotely interesting.

I never played any of the other xeno games, but did see a roommate back in the day play, or rather watch 62 hours of cutscenes from one of them on the ps2 I believe.

It's fun.  Every battle takes some time, though.  Unless you severely out level the enemy.

There's a bit of thought and strategy going into it.  If you don't use the combo and element mechanics you can still get by, just much more slowly.

Having played the last three Xeno games, im not sure where to place this one yet.  The first Xeno Chonicles was one of the best modern RPGs.  Chronicles X wasn't as good and they left too many unanswered questions in the plot.  This one however seems to be shaping up nicely.

Gitting gud with Blade combos helps a lot, and apparently Driver combos help even more

The gameplay and combat in Chronicles X was overwhelmingly superior to Xenoblade Chronicles. The story in XC was good, but playing it often felt like a chore, even when it was Reyn Time. XCX had a more interesting story that wasn't executed as well and better get finished or I'm going to cry or something.

The combat in this is also much better than the first Chronicles.

My main issue with the combat in X was the stupid long cooldowns on the skills required to break, topple, etc.  And also the limited number of characters that had those abilities.  That being a key mechanic in doing damage to things and not having every fight be a damn chore is what brought it down a lot for me.  Obviously less of an issue in your Skell but alas not every fight can be in a Skell.

Oh and they will never come back to the story and we will never know shit ever.

Xenoblade 2 is outselling both Mario Odyssey and fucking Rocket League on the eShop***, and while admittedly both have been out for longer, no other fucking game has been able to do that, not even Skyrim, and those are the only three to dethrone Stardew Valley

I am really hoping for a Chronicles X port at the bare minimum, because Bayonetta 1 and 2 are coming, and every Wii U port so far has done extremely well, and I really hope more are to come

***eShop seems to do daily or bi-weekly sales to determine their Best Sellers, and those are NTSC (vague) stats. In fucking PAL Skyrim was #1 ahead of even Odyssey and Rocket League. Don't know about X2 numbers until cray tells me what his eShop says

Maybe it will be different with Nintendo taking a more active role in financially securing AAA content now. You can tide yourself over with angry fanfiction in the meantime.

Jugger is the strongest unique I've fought so far, and you have to beat him up to upgrade the mercenaries... You have to be really good with elemental orb smashing to beat this guy. I'm good at everything except that, apparently. He's killed me 11 times.

Do sequential Blade combos

Top right tells you what to do next

Maxes out at 4, and the final element in the chain throws out an orb of that element

Practice on lower level unique mobs since they have more HP.

Here are my rare blades:
Agate
Roc
Perun
Gorg

Ursula
Dagas

Haven't resonated with Vess or Wulfric yet, but I have them both.
Title: Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Post by: LiquidSailor on December 18, 2017, 06:50:32 PM
Best to practice with blades who have lower cooldowns on their skills.  Guys like Wulfric and some others need like 10-14 auto attacks to recharge their skills, making it difficult to do the combos before the meters wear down.

Consider that as well for other members of your party.
Title: Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Post by: LiquidSailor on December 19, 2017, 03:29:39 PM
Though I keep coming across an issue.  Not sure if its a glitch in the game or what, but sometimes in battles, I can't get my main character's special meter to charge past level 1.  It just stays there stagnant.

Also, I beat the shit out of Jugger this morning. I forgot I swapped out the break move on Nia. Then Rex handles Topple, Launch and Smash with Mythra, Agate and Roc, respectively.

Stupidly obvious reason why I kept getting wrecked.

Yea but sometimes it simply won't charge.  It will go to level one, and stay there forever.

I can use the level one, charge it back to level 1 like normal, then it won't budge again.  Really fucked up a lot of big fights for me.

No, but a patch is coming in two days.  So we will see if that is fixed.

Also there's a Nopon Mural questline that is bugged under certain circumstances.   I won't go into details since I'm on chapter 9.  A lot of people are pissed about it.

It's an odd thing.  Sometimes I'll just jump off a cliff and kill myself, and things will be back to normal.

And others have to go on specific merc missions to unlock their skills.

Fun story:
I had loads of basic bitch Blades while I was trying to summon Uniques, but i just discarded them because I had no idea the mercenary shit was going to happen and that they could be useful in that capacity

I have to do jury duty next week so I think I’ll pick this up to kill time while they call me.

Looking at the combat system has me feeling like a legit retard but I’m assuming the in-game tutorials tell you how to string together attacks, and actually playing the game will make things easier to understand.

So trying to get rare blades on Rex shouldn't be a priority, rather, try to get them on other characters.

There's an item you can get to trade blades to another person, but they are fairly rare.  Its called the Overdrive Protocol or something like that.

I know for a fact you can find one in Mor Ardain, if you go to the inn, walk upstairs to where the hot springs are.  In one of the changing rooms there is a treasure chest that contains one.

Rare and Legendady cores don't guarantee unique Blades

They just increase the odds

Rex eventually gets the ability to use any Blade, according to Liquid, so get a couple uniques on him and fhen just slap everything on Nia
Title: Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 2

I've only got one rare blade from a rare core. They're easy to farm by chapter 4. Legendaries you can farm further along in the game than I am.

Don't put everything on Nia. There are other characters you don't have yet who could definitely benefit from some of the rare blades. I don't want to spoil things for you so come back for more in depth help in Chapter 4.

I think I prefer turn-based RPGs.
DON'T FIRGET MEH!

Define "best ones"

My favourites are Adenine and Wulfric

Not counting any with dedicated core crystals:

Vale
Zenobia
Adenine
Nim
Azami
Electra
Perceval
Agate
Perun

Out of the ones with dedicated core crystals, Wulfric and Gerald are absolute beasts. Praxis and Theory are fantastic, and Kasandra has a pretty fun personal sidequest.

I have, but rarely use outside of Merc missions:
Boreas
Ursula(her sidequest is along and time consuming, but she was really strong in early game)
Gorg
Godfrey
Vess(good early, didn't care for her later)
Dagas(guy is an asshole that isn't worth more than having a fire element on Merc missions. He doesn't even have for mastery...)

Herald is in Theosoir. You have to give items at a temple you break into by the rear gate. I recommend giving Herald to Zeke.

Kasandra can be obtained by salvaging at the spot below the bridge in Mor Ardain. Closest point is Abandoned Excavation #2. Some fish comes up and has a core inside if you talked to somebody (I forget who). Great for Morag.

I've been maining Rex, Nia and Tora literally the entire game.

But since getting Morag I was doing Core summons on her, and then the same with Zeke when he joined.

I like Morag the character best of everyone, but I'm meh on using her cause i don't like Brighid's  flame whips

And yeah I know I can get rid of "main" Blades now that Rex can use whoever, but meh

I find just sticking with Rex and Myra my DPS is better than when i have him and Zeke, with Blade Nia for heals

Basically I'm reeeeaaally good DPS but I'm only an okay tank and a shit healer.

Which is true of EverQuest weirdly enough

Zeke with Wulfric, Pandoria and Herald/Zenobia is like an endless supply of DPS. Sometimes I swap Praxis in there because she's faster than The other 2, and you get an extra smasher so you can swap out Roc.

Morag is a really tough evasion tank, and if you give her Electra or Kasandra she's going to keep you alive very consistently.

I tried making one of my Poppi's an evasion tank.  But it seems like its much harder to stack evasion than it is to stack block.  Less options for evasion.

Also, a DLC came out today adding more quests and some free shit.

I'm on the final Malos boss fight, but a few hours of playtime before that I switched to Morag as my tank and she is way better at holding aggro than Tora ever was (most likely due to the cores I have and how annoying it is to Tiger Tiger farm for Poppi's shit which I haven't really done) and seems to take way less damage in general. I guess evasion tank isn't a dirty term

She has Brigid, Aegedon (whatever her brother's Blade is called who is also an evasion tank) and I Overdrived her Perceval

But in the second phase Malos had a one shot group kill move and I wiped so I haven't gone back to it yet

Go buy every store you can buy. You can't buy those ones though.

Do the moneymaking trick in Mor Ardain. 1 million in 30 minutes.

Buy gold canisters.

Go to the salvage spot by the entrance to the old factory.

Make sure you have at least Salvaging 3, but the closer to 10 points+, the better. You'll get right around 100k out of every successful salvage. It's AAA, by the way.

If you actually salvage what the traders want, you can not only make a lot of money, but you get the boosters you are after as well.

So for me:

Story --  1    X    2
Battle System --  2      X      1
Length --    1      X      2
Enviroments --    1      X      2
Voice Acting --     X      1/2
Music --       1       2        X

Despite being half finished, X's story was way more interesting in concept.  One had the best and most complete story, where as 2's story was just kind of ok.  Nothing ground breaking.

X had more battle variety with the mechs, but the break/topple etc mechanic in that game was hampered by long cooldowns on those skills, and was basically void once you got Skells anyway.  Because who wants to fight on foot when you can do it in a skell?  The Battle system in 2 works well, as the break/topple mechanic is more functional, and elemental chaining is well designed and fun.  At first I didn't like that you only got three skills per character at a time, as I was used to having many like 1 and X had.  But it worked out nicely.  1's battle system was fine, but obviously as it came first, the formula was improved upon.

Xeno 1's world felt much larger and it also felt like there was more to do.  X by comparison had a smaller world, but also had lots to do.  2's world, I found, had you visiting some areas quite often, and completely neglecting others.  There were certain areas I never had a reason to visit more than once, if at all.

2 was horribly lacking in the variety of environments that 1 and X had.  1 was insanely good, where day and night made a big difference in how an area looked.  X had the benefit of making it an alien world, so the variety in the things you saw was vast.

Voice acting might be subjective in a way, but I thought X was the most normal sounding.  They actually had known talent do the voices, but they weren't annoying either in the way that Rex is.  1 and 2 both had their hits and misses for voice actors.  Zeke being one of the best of 2's offerings.  And some of the Blades were well done.  1 was similar in that some voices were better than others, but a lot of the interaction between characters was what made it good.  Melia and Dunban shit talking Reyn was always fun to hear.

Music, 1 has the best by far.  Each zone, day or night, had the perfect music to go with it.  And it was extremely well done.  Much of the music in X was forgettable, and the music that wasn't was horrible.  New LA's theme still angers me.  X also had a habit of blasting the music over a voice acted cutscene for some reason, making shit hard to hear.  2's music was just ok.

Also let me know when you beat 2 so we can discuss the ending.

I'm going to beat 2 soon. I'm like 90% of the way there, but I mostly play it on the go and I've been busy with work stuff.

I think you're right about why I like it less than most fans. I still like it, but I'm less enamored. I liked a lot of the X music, but WTF were they thinking with the volume during cut scenes? They did it a couple times in 2, but to a lesser extent. I don't think it ever happened in 1.

Yea.  I played Xenogears fairly recently since everyone always talked it up so much.  Having finished it, I wasn't overly impressed considering the hype it got, but if I look at the time when it came out, I can understand it a bit more.

Plus they actually admit to their main characters fucking, where as Shulk and Fiora's love was implied but never really shown (poor Melia) and Rex is just a fucking moron.

Blade story quests aside, that was the only time the story was ever interesting
