I had to take a Soldier to the psyche ward once.
A new kid in the Unit i hadnt met; a third person was needed for the trip and i was 'hey you'-d.
She seemed perfectly normal on the drive there, but when she was being processed, and was told she needed to give up her cellphone (only supervised calls on a landline) she. lost. her. shit.
I'm talking cussing spitting kicking screaming had to be held down and sedated shit loss.
It was pretty disturbing!

They're pretty low key generally with occasional outbursts. There may be one or two aggressive types or someone who has some disorder that makes separating reality from fantasy a challenge, but most just sit around watching TV and going about their day. And I've never seen the classic drooling vegetable that they usually show on tv or in movies.

I've been there for consults during residency. They're depressing places. Most people there are harmless, but some are so medicated that they look like they're sleepwalking. I always kept my guard up, though. Little things like not letting a potential crazy get between me and the door. They usually do a good job of separating out the violent ones, who are sent to places that I assume are a combination of jail and a psych ward.

I also interned at a halfway house for people who were transitioning out of psych hospitals but weren't able to live on their own yet. That was a lot more chill.

A friend of mine had pretty bad depression and was receiving in-patient electroshock therapy at a place that was nicer than where I trained, but you still had the feeling of being around some over-medicated people.

That's hardcore.
I'd rather not deal with folks who are physically/mentally hurting, it saddens the shit out of me.

I had a friend/ex who spent some time in an asylum back in high school. Her parents put here there for a few weeks when she got pretty uncontrollable. Settled her down for a few months anyway

Yeah, there's a lot of wasted potential. The families have it rough because there's little they can do to help.

I have a sister that worked on the same floor as the psyche ward. A patient tried to escape from it and picked her up and threw her against the wall. She fell on the IV pole and broke tail bone. She still has a bad back from it now.
