Title: Black Mirror
Post by: scourge on October 27, 2016, 01:54:23 PM
Sci-Fi anthology show. The third season just came out on Netflix. All the episodes are on there, and it's pretty damn good. I might be favoring it cause its new and all that but I think it's better than either The Twighlight Zone or The Outter Limits.

Love it, but I thought this season was a bit hit and miss personally. I thought the second half was the stronger by a fair way. I liked the social commentary aspect of the first episode. Second and third a bit forgettable. Fourth really good. Fifth I liked but the twist was a bit predictable (although again I enjoyed the social commentary aspect). Sixth was really good too.

Cheers.

I've only seen the first 3 of this season. Agreed the first had the most impact (feel like I should be giving you 5 stars right now?) The 2nd and 3rd were a little depressing. That 3rd one, the own I just finished, was particularly bleak.

It somehow reminded me of the episode where the prime minister has to have sex with a pig from I think the second season.

Ok you were right, the 4th episode was soooo damn good. Also liked that it ended on a high note. I sort of expected something like that. I was sitting there wondering "ok where's the technology shaping life to an insane degree angle" that all of these have knowing that there was going to be some sort of element to the world itself, but even knowing pieces, it was just a great story with great characters that you rooted for more the more you watched them. Really wonderful.

A nice little caption about the episode

Quote
But as in the past — notably in bittersweet episodes like “Be Right Back” and “The Entire History of You” — the show also has a unique flair for romance. And the new season’s standout “San Junipero,” a twisty love story, is its best episode to date.

All my European friends adore this show, but I've found it to be one of the most inconsistent anthologies I've ever seen. I watched the first two seasons (not the X-Mas one yet, though) and the first episode of this season, and probably was unimpressed by more than I was impressed by. It has all the subtlety of Razm fucking a 600 pound Chinese prostitute in the middle of Times Square, that's for sure.

Still, I'll probably watch the remaining episodes because it's good once in a while and I'm a sucker for sci-fi anthologies.

The X-Mas one with Jon Hamm? Really good. One of the best.

I'm a big fan. It's classic sci-fi. Slightly off-kilter, slightly futuristic versions of our world, exploring the ways in which technology can be abused if it is taken to its logical conclusion. They have managed to get an amazing group of performers to play roles. I agree with scourge, I think might be better than Twilight Zone (gasp!) Part of the reason is fewer episodes. This show is quality over quantity. And part of it is simply that the Twilight Zone belongs to an older era. The things that concerned people then are different than the things that concern us now.

Overall it's easier to point out the episodes I don't like, since the majority of them are excellent. In the last season that was San Junipero (not really sure why people are saying this is the best episode of the season) and to a lesser extent, Playtest (Wyatt Russell was excellent in it, but the conclusion to the story felt very generic.)

It's too bad the first episode of the first season was National Anthem, as that isn't a great way to introduce people to the series as it isn't one of the stronger episodes.

The X-mas episode was outstanding.

Yeah I wasn't in the mood & turned it off 5 minutes into that 1st episode.

I am curious though of how it played out...

You should give the Christmas special a try (it's part of Season 2.) It's a real mind fuck.

Oh sweet Jesus.

I just watched the 1st episode of Season One.

I was hooked on how absurd & yet ridiculously serious it was....fucking a pig on national tv to save a princess!

I would've loved to be on set watching all the actors & film crew trying to keep a straight face.

2nd episode reminded me of a Kurt Vonnegut short story.

As a huge Outer Limits fan, I find this show seriously lacking.

Reading the synopsis of each episode (1st 3 Seasons) I'm kinda just picking what sounds interesting.

I think you might have the worst taste on the board, and coming from me that's really saying something.

Just finished Most Hated In The Nation.

Probably one of the most satisfying endings from all the others I've seen so far.

Heh talk about getting de ja vu watching an episode about someone losing all their memories.

I saw about 10 mins of White Bear (Punishment Park) on tv a couple years ago...couldn't figure out what was going on & changed the channel.

Turned out to be a decent episode.

I've watched the first three so far. There's an odd running theme of having things stuck into your temple this season.

Finished first episode. Meh! Wasn’t a huge fan. Though not often an episode ends on a happy note

Interesting Aaron Paul cameo

These do seem even slower than previous seasons. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it is noticeable. I just finished the fourth, and while I tend to find the subject matter of that episode to be fairly tired most of the time, I actually liked what they did with it.

spoiler

I was certain they were going to pull the rug out from under us with the crew realizing that living in a universe within to the internet, essentially as MMORPG Npcs would still be absolute hell, being constantly farmed or trolled. Still not as bad as living with crazy, low-rent Matt Damon though. This episode, or at least its conflict, was basically just a repackaging of that classic Twilight Zone where the kid had reality warping powers.

I agree, just finished the second episode. I get the message they were going for but felt like a rehash we have already seen done better in earlier seasons.

Finished the season, and wasn't blown away by most of the episodes. Some good ones though, last episode I felt was the best but ending was predictable

Last episode did confirm a lingering theory all the episodes take part in the same universe

Yeah, I definitely enjoyed this, but it didn't leave me itching for next season. The fallout for each episode was pretty predictable, especially in Arkangel. Black Museum was definitely trying hard to make you think things were going to go the opposite way, and I bought that for most of the episode. But I do have to say that the end was really kind of sickening. I mean, the main attraction might have been resolved, but all those little pocket-version souvenirs still exist, essentially negating everything. That's not a bad thing story-wise, but it does make the character's feeling of triumph seem overstated.

Very true there is probably thousands upon thousands of those souvenirs out in the public

This episode reminded me of th Christmas “egg” story. Find this season is a rehash of stories already told in earlier stories

The thing is with Black Museum is I really didn’t find Rolo’s character to be the “villain” of the story.
Sure he sold out in the end (taking money from sados) but he’s reasoning wasn’t out of pure greed but simply to keep the museum, his business from closing down.

I mean the dude who got his dead partner implanted into his head was a stupid decision in the first place & not Rolo’s fault that that symbiotic relationship broke down.
Rolo even tried to fix the situation several times.

Later we see the daughter with the mother’s consciousness inside her & the relationship works.

Yeah she outright murdered him. While here he was digitally torturing a projection. Sounds like the UN didn’t even give the hologram the same rights as the bear??? or they would have shut it down

Speaking of the bear I know they couldn’t kill it but why and how did he get possession of it? Seems like he shouldn’t get evidence to his own crime that got him booted from the company

This season isn’t as good as previous ones. My favorites so far have been USS Callahan and Metalhead. I tend to like the darker, nihilistic ones. I’ve got two left in this season.

Yeah this was a hard season to watch.

Found myself watching each episode in instalments just so I could appreciate them more without getting bored.

I really didn’t like the crocodile episode. Had no sympathy for her reasons and overall just wanted her to get caught.

Were we supposed to sympathize with her? I figured we were watching the villain of the story.
Title: Re: Black Mirror

Black Museum seems like a bad parody of some of Black Mirror’s best episodes, particularly the Jon Hamm Christmas special. The message of Black Mirror, if i had to sum it up, is that the technology we’ve come to love and depend on can be twisted to ruin our lives and take our humanity. That doesn’t work if the episode highlights technology that only an idiot would agree to use.

I watched the USS Callister episode with Fat Damon and Your Mother.  I really liked it, but the ending was a bit too Matrixy.  In this world, people upload onto online games, but I figured if there was some major issues, the game would shut off and bring them back.  There would have to be some failsafes.  Considering Your Mother got all the DNA evidence, I just figured the guy would be forced out of his game, then have a knock on the door from the police a little bit later.

Poor dude!

I'm imagining he spent all his life aspiring to be an actor.

Then finally the moment he makes it big, he gets labelled Fat Damon!
