Batman Inc was by far the best issue of the week, but Justice League Dark was a great change of pace from the slow, character-centric, hardtolike run Milligan was building. It's much more straightforward, but excellently done, more in keeping with Demon Knights now I think in tone; characters are important, but not in the kind of raw, ugly depth we got in Milligan's run. Meanwhile there is a lot more magic and world building, and John Constantine remains one of the best characters in comics.

Something must elude me, for I found it rather pedestrian :/
I got to admit, both I, Vampire and Justice League Dark just leave me cold.
On the other hand Swamp Thing and Animal Man I love.

No biggie, different strokes.

Meanwhile I'm finding most of the Court of Owls stuff to be tiresome and overdone, while everyone else in comics apparently loves it (I'm actually enjoying Snyder's main stuff, but the expansion into a crossover has driven the concept into the ground).

Hah, I thought the whole thing was spot on. I don't necessarily prefer it to the Milligan run, but I certainly see it as a book that is easier to like. Loving the world building and all that, too. "The first tesserect! The Eight Dimensional Map!", nevermind the callback to some of my favorite stories (Murder of Crows, Perludes and Nocturnes, Books of Magic).

Pitch perfect, really.

They've decided to put a character called "Doctor Mist" in the role of the Elder Statesman Sorcerer of the DCnU. He's a Black Guy who has lived 7,000 (or 2,000, depending on which source you go by) for various reasons. Like Doctor Strange normally, or Brother Voodoo during Civil War, he's kind of the tool of the man -- he's being employed by a governmental organization, Argus, to do all their magic crap for them.

Assuming Dr. Fate is going to Earth 2, it's a recasting that works pretty well. In the old continuity he was the guy responsible for the birth of the Homo Magi race of beings in the DCU, had been manipulating humanity to create magicians and engineers - pushing evolution on two fronts - over the millenia.

I actually enjoyed this quite a bit. The reveal of the Books of Magic was kind of weak imo but it didn't take away too much from the book. The next issue should be a lot of fun with them traveling to the House of Mystery.

Cool.

Constantine is such a wonderful bastard. His lies just roll right out.

I was suprised to see that neither Constantine nor Zatanna knew of the Black Room. I liked that.

That was actually probably the one sticking point for me, the only portion of the issue that kind of caught me off guard.

It just seems unlikely to me that they wouldn't have known about it. It's just a fucking room where shit gets kept, after all.

Meh, guess their knowledge is more in esoteric, old world shit. But it's just strange to see them all immediately gasp "Huzzah! The First Tesserect! The eight dimensional map! The map to the books of magic!" on sight, but then not know about what is probably a poorly kept government secret.

I'm not shitting on the First Tesserect scene, which I guess didn't work for you if I am interpreting you correctly. I love stuff like that. But not knowing about the black room stretched credibility just a titch.

It added an aura of mystery to that portion of the government that it really didn't have until now. It makes you wonder what else they can do if they could keep this room secret. I know it likely won't have a great payoff(if any) but it worked for me at this time.

The map scene was working for me until they revealed what it was a map to. The description of the books of magic didn't really work for me. It lacked creativity and was just a little too normal for me. You had a great build-up with the cube but it just led to typical all-powerful objects.

I don't really like just these four artifacts being the source of all magic. It is a bland and simplistic way to go imo. You lose some of the mystery behind magic when you do something like this.

If it actually ends up being four books, then I'll agree (although I hasten to add...source of EARTH magic).

I have a feeling it won't be that simple, in the same way that Zatanna looking for her fathers' books didn't turn out at all how she expected.

To put it more bluntly, I'm pretty sure the four pillars of magic won't be books at all, but people, probably children, one of whom will be Tim Hunter.

Well it looks like they're still books for the moment, but who knows. This arc is pretty good so far - the new issue built more momentum than any issue so far.

I, Vampire has been AMAZING.

Last issue totally blew me away.

Justice League Dark, under Lemire, is cool for what it is. It's a great straight forward characterful team book with interesting plots and great little continuity nods. Its everything that the Justice League book SHOULD be, or a good Avengers book, but playing with all the cool Vertigo magic toys of DC instead of the usual sci fi stuff.

But I, Vampire is doing much smarter, more layered stuff. It's positioning characters as the embodiments of opposing philosophies and then having them tear each other apart to see whose ideology is the best.

Just great, really powerful stuff.

I am somewhat disappointed by Dr. Mists betrayal and reasoning for it.

Who do you guys think is the being behind Faust and Mist?

I'm fine with it, but I really don't like Mist's revised origin.

Blech. Completely unimaginative.

I would have prefered for them to stay away from the betrayal angle with this team for a little bit longer. Just relied on the strength of the villains for this arc. We already have Constantine's betrayal on the horizon and we just got through Xanadu's betrayal as well. It is so very expected for a team like this that I would have found it more unique to not have them betray each other. I also liked the idea of Mist playing the straight man to Constantine.

I agree completely about his origin as well. So vanilla.

I sort of new that Lemire was going for a JLU style cast here, making me feel that any non Unholy Trinity member (Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman) is kind of expendable in one way or another. I did like the idea of Mist as a Dr. Strange esque character for the DCU, especially with Fate moving over to Earth 2, but I think he could still redeem himself. His redirection of magic powers are also a little too deus ex machina to allow for regular use in a magic title, I suspect. Even Zatanna comments on it in the preview.

As for the Mist/Constantine relationship, I suspect you'll get something similar once Frankenstein joins the team.

But yeah, the origin was just so mundane. Ugh. Bummer. I really enjoyed the earlier Roy Thomas version, that had him as a low powered manipulator, a la Vandal Savage, over the years, who created the Homo Magi race. And I think that would have played in nicely with the idea of him as a Dr. Strange type, without the big drawback of Dr. Strange in the MU (which is that he is not only the most knowledgable and experienced, but also the most powerful...makes him hard to write, I suspect).

The guy behind Faust and Mist is the new character, the Moriarty to Constantine's Holmes, isn't he? The guy who is a reference to shitty Keanu Reeves Constantine.

Not only that but since it's expected and even teased, holding off on any for an arc or two would just let them ratchet up the tension for when it does happen.
