When you think of a character, what artist comes to mind? Try not to do the obvious like Invincible: Ryan Ottley etc etc. Someone who has had various people drawing them for years. Loki Esad Ribic The JLA Doug Mahnke. Conan Cary Nord (honorable mention to Buscema) Merged Hulk Gary Frank Savage Hulk Dale Keown http://www.herorealm.com/images/Previews/May_2008/HULK_POSTERBOOK.jpg WWHulk Paul Pelletier Thor Olivier Coipel Cap Bryan Hitch

I think Strider's portrayal of Slither's dead uncle is pretty much the definitive one.

Savage Hulk - Sal Buscema. It's the scowl, the eyebrows, the eyes, the fact this was the basis for the 80's cartoon.. THIS is the Savage Hulk for me. He's just pseudo apelike. Doctor Doom - John Byrne Okay fuck his views on anything, but damn, John can draw Doctor Doom. The mask is perfect this way. Expressive, yet not cartoony. Batman - Stefe Kaufman The pointy ears need more love. Plus it's the Grey / Blue, which is more my favourite than the other Batman variants.

It was my early work. I need to update it.

I'd kill for a Byrne drawn Doom comic, and I think the one character Jim Lee always did draw perfectly was Magneto

I'll second Jim Lee's Magneto. That is basically what I think of when I think of classic Mags.

John Byrne had the monopoly on Magneto for years until Jim Lee came along.
Jim Lee is pretty much a more realistic looking Byrne. They both even do the swoop in the side of the helmet like they and everyone else well fucking should.
He even has the same fucking copy/paste faces he gives everyone, and their Wolverines are both distinct from that mould for roughly the same reasons.
Coipel does an absolutely fantastic Magneto though. I just like the guy's art in general. His being on Not A Hero was definitely a huge bonus.
Norm Breyfogle still does by far the best Batman I've ever seen, and his Etrigan is nothing to sneeze at either.

Don't know why but I always think of Kubert's Hulk: Not the best Hulk artist or the most iconic depiction so I dunno why I always think of him. Maybe because I am too young to have been exposed to Buscema's first-hand and Kubert's is my favourite of the modern Hulk artists (Lee Weeks, Pagulayan and Pelletier are too recent for me to think of them as the go-to guys even though I love all of them as Hulk artists). It might also be because Kubert drew one of my favourite covers of all time: Iron Man is Sean Chen just post-Heroes Reborn for me: Cheers.

That very top Magneto is utterly definitive. That is just fantastic. Jim Lee somehow gave him the most epic fucking poses when he did ANYTHING, though. Byrne's shit is still awesome, especially in an old school vibe kind of villainy way, but Lee makes Magneto like a fucking angel. I'm gushing ii'm sgushinmgh ;m hugtruhns

Also, everyone take note of the swoop. They excluded it from Marvel vs. Capcom, and removed Magneto from having a fucking awesome character design. It's not a BUCKET. I have this exact image as a sig on my photobucket http://www.comicsrecommended.com/images/artsamples/x-men-byrne-magneto-room.jpgDouble also, Claremont is tailor-made to write the Beast's dialog.
