IMO, the "NEXT BIG CROSSOVER" would be dull to me if I still read comics.
What happened to just an everyday slugfest with a typical villain?

Changing powersets. Like Thing turning human as a plotpoint for the bazillionth time. Or Spider-Man talking to spiders. Or Superman getting electro powers.

I think it was the early 2000's, for Marvel and the late 1990's for DC.

The thing that really pisses me off about big events is the fact they tell you what they plan on doing before hand. When was the last time someone got killed without them telling you before hand someone got killed. There is no shock and awe. I would love to pick up an issue of say Bird of Prey and 13 pages in Huntress gets capped.

Captain America #26 no pre-hype whatsoever.

I agree. They do it at Marvel, kind of, and they TRY to do it at DC, but then they undermine their "superstar" and spoil stuff. If the run is delayed(Whedon and Astonishing) they have a valid excuse for publishing the books that are on-time and will spoil critical parts of the "superstar" run. If they completely undermine the impact of a "superstar's" run (Countdown, DONG), then it really just defeats the purpose of buying the monthly book instead of the TPB.

Yeah, say what you will about Secret Invasion, but it hit you like a punch thrown by Mike Tyson when Elektra was revealed to be a skrull.

O/T - So, after death, what is next most overused, no-longer-interesting.....plot used in comics? "The Secret Origin of ___-Man" "___-Man: Year One" - a retcon of above origin story ___-Man's Secret Past" - a retcon of the above retcon, but with dark secrets of parents "___-Man: Origins" - a return to the original origin but with some elements of later retcons "___-Man: Hidden Years" - early life of teenage emo angst and coincidental run-ins with future teammates and villians "___-Man: Year Zero" - a retelling of "___-Man: Year One" but with modern-day elements and so on and so on and so on
