Who does it? I've heard it's pretty damn great for cardio and fat cutting. Anybody do any particular exercises?

I can jump the fuck out that rope!

For like a minute and a half, then I end up farting and wheezing in the corner.

I tried jumping rope like a month ago and found I don't have the coordination for it which is sad because I use to be able to double dutch when I was a kid. I don't know what it is about poor kids and double dutch.

What gets me is the specific cardio of it. I can run wind sprints, do 45 min of Plyometrics, any cardio machine for over an hour on high levels, I just can not jump rope for any length of time. I can work a heavy bag all out for 20 minutes, and after 5 minutes of jumping rope, I'm dead. It's weird.

Jumping rope is a full-body workout.

The closest comparison I can think of is swimming or maybe stairs.

It works out your tendons, your back, abs, legs, arms, chest, cardio...

Technique can also have a lot to do with it. I learned a way to jump rope in a martial arts class that works the hell out of your quads, specifically, but you can just jump for an hour, easy. Remember to breathe, though.

Buddy Lee has a nice system. I have personally found that is helpful to work up the wrist and calf endurance first. The athletic transferance is unreal though. You become more mobile in anything fight related

It is not great if you have any type of orthopedic problems ( e.g., joint problems, back problems ) as it beats it stresses the fuck out of your ankles, knees, low back ect.

But if you are not hampered by these things it is in awesome cardio workout and muscle endurance workout as well.

This thread is kinda making me want to take up jumping rope. I've been thinking of looking for something to add to my fairly non diverse workout of running/situps/pushups.

Well, it does beat you up a bit but in a worst case scenario buy a longer rope, find a slightly softer surface to jump on (the softer the harder it is because your achilles has to force itslef to get that leverage) and goa bit slower. Gradually picjk up speed. I hate rope, LOATHE it. That means its good for you

It will pass. Those tendons needed to be worked out, anyway.

You aren't kidding. I tried it for the first time last night, and I don't think I've ever felt anything quite like that from my feet before.

Shorter rope is a speed rope. The longer it is the more casual your jumps. Get a slightly longer rope that you feel comfortable jumping and mix in double ups (skip the rope twice in the air) and some basic jumprp rope movements, they help a lot. When ypu feel better with it start adding in sequences of double ups. When you can do that ok, use the shorter rope for more speed.

what type of intervals did you do Gree/khell?  Or did you just jump rope straight for 20 mins, or something?

I started with a four minute warmup, then was doing a minute of jumping with thirty seconds of rest for twenty minutes. I'd intended to do a full half hour, but decided to cut it short for my first time.

Get the 19$ Everlast round timer.

The Gym Boss  is great too.

The first gives you 2 or 3 minute rounds with 30 or 60 second rests and the gym boss lets you set any time you like.

I recommend following Boxing style rounds. At first, or auntil you work upo to it, you can do 2 minute rounds with one minute rest. You'll feel a little better evrery session and when you hit 10 rtounds make them 3 minute rounds with 1 minute rest

That is insane, I would trade the ability to bench 350+ for that. I'd have too.

I jump daily.  It's good carido, I use it as a cool down when I'm doing a circuit or something.  It's a way to exercise while resting.  I hate it and love it.

So, it's been a bit a week. The second and third days I did 18 minutes with two minutes rest and a minute off. I'm up to 24 (I'm doing multiples of three for two minutes of jumping followed by one of rest)minutes now with the same reps/rest cycle. Starting next week I'm gonna up it to three minute reps for a full 40 minutes. I'm already noticing a decent increase in muscle tone, and it's no longer wrecking my feet. All in all, I'm pretty satisfied.

You should do rope as a cool down.  Like I'll do something like a minute of kettlebell snatches with a 20kg or a 24kg and then a minute of medicine ball off the wall then a minute of rope ... all non-stop for 45-60 minutes.  The rope is the cool down.  You learn to love the rope when you are doing shit that's more grueling.  It goes from being something you hate to something you love because it lets you recover while you do minimal work.

Sometimes I add more to the circuit, but rope is always the cooldown part added in.  That's my typical Saturday workout.

You think the rope wears you out too much beforehand to get a full, normal workout?  I used to find that was the case when playing racquetball.

I thought that when I first started.  It was exerting.  Not so much anymore once you get the feel for it.  I see kids who don't jump come in and do that shit way too high, I got a good technique by this point.  I'll skip a lot of the time too.

Yea but its actually pretty hard if you pick up the pace like a psycho.  There are different ways to work it.  If you 'cool down' with it though, its jokes though, real.
