http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Music/08/10/hayes.obit/index.html(CNN) -- Soul singer and arranger Isaac Hayes, who won Grammy awards and an Oscar for the theme from the 1971 action film "Shaft," has died, sheriff's officials in Memphis, Tennessee, reported Sunday. Relatives found Hayes, 65, unconscious in his home next to a still-running treadmill, said Steve Shular, a spokesman for the Shelby County Sheriff's Department. Paramedics attempted to revive him and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m., the sheriff's department said. No foul play is suspected, the agency said in a written statement. Hayes was a longtime songwriter and arranger for Stax Records in Memphis, playing in the studio's backup band and crafting tunes for artists such as Otis Redding and Sam and Dave in the 1960s. See photos of singer Isaac Hayes » He released his first solo album in 1967, and his 1969 follow-up, "Hot Buttered Soul," became a platinum hit. In 1971, the theme from "Shaft" topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and won an Academy Award for best original theme song. The song and the movie score also won Grammy awards for best original score and movie theme. Hayes won a third Grammy for pop instrumental performance with the title track to his 1972 "Black Moses" album. From the late 1990s through 2006, Hayes provided the voice of "Chef" for Comedy Central's raunchy animated series "South Park," as well as numerous songs. The role introduced him to a new generation of fans, but he left after the show lampooned his own religion, the Church of Scientology.

That was odd
never got over what he did to south park hu. He acted like a petty little bitch because they made fun of his religion when he happily lampooned every other religion. Trey Parker and Matt Stone made him relevant to a new generation and he threw it back in their faces. Fuck Isaac Hayes.

When you're a scientologist, you cease to be an adult and have your decisions guided by the 'Church'.

No, he was still an adult. Stop trying to make excuses for his dumb ass. He made stupid decisions, and that will reflect on the legacy he leaves behind.

Trey and Matt *knew* he was being influenced by the Church regarding the decisions. Scientologists *have* had their lives and friendships ruined by the Church because they force decisions down on their members. Issac was interviewed after 'Trapped in the Closet' aired, and initially, guess what-he had no problem with it. He said 'South Park makes fun of everything'. Yet a later interview, after he was talked to by the Church, made him bash the episode and cut his contract.

Fuck Isaac Hayes. the funny thing about that is Hayes denied having any problem w/Parker & Stone, and was as surprised as the rest of the world when Chef was kilt off.

Yeah, like I said. He's an adult that makes his own decisions. His decision was to allow the Church of Scientology to have influence over his life. It was his stupid mistake. Not the church's.

IIRC, what happened was he was ok with the episode, the episode aired and he ended up in the hospital, some reps from the Church of Crazy ass Couch jumpers released a statement saying he didn't appreciate the episode, Parker and Stone killed off Chef, and then Hayes got out of the hospital and was all, "WTF?". I could be wrong though.

Singer Isaac Hayes performs at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 17th Annual Induction Dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York in this March 18, 2002 file photo. Oscar-winning soul singer Hayes died in Memphis on August 10, 2008, aged 65, his friend and former manager Onzie Horne said. [Agencies]
Isaac Hayes has passed away. The singer-songwriter was found by his wife at his home in Tennessee, US yesterday.
Isaac, 65, was rushed to a hospital but pronounced dead an hour later. The cause of death has not yet been established, although it is believed he suffered a simultaneous heart attack and stroke. Isaac had previously suffered a minor stroke in 2006. Isaac's wife Adjowa and the couple's two-year-old son returned to their home shortly after noon yesterday and found Isaac unconscious on the floor near his treadmill where he had been exercising.
A police spokesperson said: "Family members believe it is a medical condition that might have led to his death. Mr. Hayes was being treated for a number of medical issues." Isaac's career as composer and singer spanned four decades. He began his career in the 60s as a songwriter for Stax records in his native Memphis, arranging tunes for artists such as Otis Reading and Sam and Dave.
He co-wrote soul classics such as 'Soul Man' and 'Hold On I'm Coming'. Isaac - dubbed 'The Black Moses' after one of his albums - released his first solo album in 1967 and subsequently helped create the template for disco in the 70s. In 1971, he won an Oscar and a Grammy award for his 'Theme From Shaft', taken from his score for the film 'Shaft'.
He was also known for his distinctive voice and look - bald and adorned with gold chains. Isaac also had a successful career as an actor, appearing in TV shows 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air', 'Miami Vice' and 'The A-Team' as well as films such as 'Escape From New York' and 'It Could Happen to You'. His trademark deep, rich voice helped him reach a new generation of fans as he voiced the character of Chef in cartoon 'South Park' from 1997 until 2006.
Isaac was married four times during his life and fathered 12 children. Many stars have issued statements praising his work and achievements and offered messages of condolence to his family.
Elvis Presley's former wife Priscilla said: "We have lost not only an incredible talent but a wonderful leader to his community and a dear friend. To me there will only be one Isaac Hayes, gifting us with years of performing, writing and a voice that penetrated deep into our souls. He is to be admired for changing his life around and standing steadfast to his beliefs, his integrity and to helping others." http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/showbiz/2008-08/11/content_6925842.htm
